The Elkins Elks completed a three-game sweep of 3A-4 teams with a 46-41 win over Cedarville in the Class 3A Region 1 championship game in Booneville Monday night.

The Elks, the top seed from the 3A-1 who had beaten Charleston and Paris on the way to the finals, started the fourth quarter with a 33-26 lead only to see Cedarville rally for a 36-35 edge on a steal and layup by Cody Dickens with 5:18 to play.

A couple of Braedon Welch free throws had given the Elks the lead back and Welch hit two more that came via technical foul call with 3:06 to play and it was 39-36.

A pair of Trace Keller free throws gave him nine points on the night and made it a five-point game, but Darryl Kattich scored inside and from the top of the key to tie it at 41-41 with 1:15 left.

Kattich was the leading scorer in the game with 17.

Welch gave his team the lead back with a driving layup with 48 seconds remaining and, after a Pirate foul, Aiden Underdown hit the front end of a one-and-one to make it 44-41.

When the Pirates couldn’t get a tying 3, Welch was sent back to the free-throw line and he hit both ends of a one-and-one to set the final at 46-41.

With his eight fourth-quarter points, Welch finished with 13 to lead the Elks. Underdown added 10 points and seven rebounds.

Cedarville led 12-6 five minutes into the game but Elkins was within one by the end of the opening quarter and there would be three tie scores in the second quarter, including the 19-19 halftime score after Kattich drove inside for a basket just before the buzzer.

Hayden Morton was also in double figures for the Pirates with 10.

There were six lead changes in the overtime session the final time on a Lidge Stinson bucket that made it 42-41. Stinson finished with nine points.

Ethan Mayberry converted two free throws with 3.5 seconds to go to make it 44-41.

The Bulldogs were down eight in the second half but rallied to take the lead, then trailed again only to tie it at 35-35 on a Camdon Holcomb basket with 5.4 seconds to play. Holcomb led all players with 14 points.

Mequeil Ellinburg led Paris with 10 points.
