Fayetteville runs past 6A-West foe Har-Ber to move to boys basketball semifinals

LITTLE ROCK — Landon Glasper scored 26 points for the Fayetteville Bulldogs in a 69-51 victory over Springdale Har-Ber in the quarterfinals of the Class 6A State Tournament Thursday night at Gryphon Arena, but the Bulldogs needed everyone else to secure the victory

That’s because Glasper spent extended stretches on the bench in foul trouble. He picked up his second foul at the 5:50 mark of the second quarter and sat until the final 39 seconds. He picked up his third at the 1:51 mark of the third quarter, his fourth with 6:43 left in the game and fouled out with 2:42 left.

“Our bench played a big part tonight,” said Fayetteville Coach Brad Stamps. We had to use a lot of them for the last four minutes of the first half and we held them scoreless (Actually, Har-Ber scored three points in the last three minutes of the first half.

“It makes you nervous when you have to finish the game with your best player on the bench, but we were able to get it done.”

While Glasper led the Bulldogs in the scoring column. Jadyn Haney, Mason Simpson and Ornate Gains scored nine points to help the Bulldogs (21-6) advance to Saturday’s semifinal against either Bentonville at 1:30 p.m. Saturday.

Har-Ber finishes the season at 19-9.

Glasper opened the game like he and the Bulldogs were going to run away from the Wildcats as they jumped out to lead of 9-0 and 14-3 with Glasper doing all the scoring.

When he was called for second would at the 5:50 mark of the second quarter, he accounted for 18 points and the Bulldogs were up 27-10.

Har-Ber, thanks to two 3-pointers by Carmeron Mains and two are throws by Miles Rolfe, did close the gap to 32-21. However, any hopes of Har-Ber getting any closer were negated by shooting 5-of-13 from the foul line.

Fayetteville pushed its lead to 44-28 in the first five minutes of the third quarter, thanks to seven points by Glasper. Even with him going to the bench for most of the last four minutes of the quarter, the Bulldogs led 50-37 going into the fourth quarter.

Har-Ber closed to 50-41 which was close as it got thanks to 1-of-2 free throws by Mains and two by Rolfe. Free-throw shooting proved to be a problem for the Wildcats, who shot 15-of-32 form the line.

The Bulldogs answered with a 3-pointer by Simpson to make it 53-41, two free throws by Haney to make it 55-46 and 1-of-2 at the line by Gaines and two free throws by Jack Erck to make it 58-41, putting Har-Ber away.

Mains led the Wildcats with 21 points, making 5-of-11 three-pointers and grabbed 4 rebounds. Rolfe had 13 points, shooting 4-of-8 from the floor.

BENTONVILLE 59, BRYANT 36

Holding a 25-21 halftime lead, the Bentonville Tigers (21-8) went on a 12-0 run to put the Bryant Hornets (17-9) away and advance to Saturday’s semifinal game.

The Tigers opened the half on a drive by Hayden Shanks, a 3-pointer by Harrison Hicks, two free throws by Caden Miller, two free throws by Shanks and a drive by Shanks.

“I feel like our guys take pride in winning the first three minutes of the third quarter,” said Bentonville Coach Dick Rippee. “We felt we didn’t close the firs half very well, but Bryant had a lot to do with that.”

The Tigers led 25-14 with 2:28 left in the first half before Bryant came back with a rebound by Landyn Newburn, a three-pointer by Newburn and a basket off a turnover by Khassen Robinson. 

However, the Hornets were not able to come back from Bentonville’s run to start the second half and were outscored 23-7 in the third quarter.

Bentonville held Bryant to 15-of-56 shooting in the game, including 5-of-28 on three-pointers and out rebounded the Hornets 30-22.

“We had a good plan tonight,” said Rippee. “We knew Bryant had great guards who like to shoot it and we were able to get out there and get hands in their faces. We showed a great deal of focus tonight.

Shanks led the Tigers with 15 points and four rebounds. Miller had 12 points and 11 rebounds. Robinson led the Hornets with 13 points, but shot 3-of-11 on three-pointers. Newburn and 11 points and five rebounds.
