There were dozens of memorable games during the 2019-2020 San Diego Section high school boys basketball season, and Scorebook Live's Bodie DeDsilva was at many of them.
Here's a look back at the top seven games DeSilva covered this season.
The Falcons and Torreys squared off in mid-December in the annual Grossmont Winter Classic. Country Day led 10-8 after one quarter, but faced a halftime deficit after scoring only three points in the second quarter. They turned things around in the second half by scoring 31 points, the last two coming on a buzzer-beating layup by sophomore guard Marc Begin, to win 44-42.
The Barons and Knights, two teams that were in and out of the top ten rankings throughout the season got together for the first of two games in the first annual Border Boyz Classic. The Knights led after each of the first three quarters, but the Barons scored 23 points in the final quarter capped by a DJ Sanders and-one with under five seconds to play to complete the comeback and secure a 58-57 victory.
The two Coastal League teams entered the late January game undefeated in league play, but it was the Knights who had the distinction of being San Diego's top team that week. After a back and forth first quarter the Lancers were able to grab the lead and hold off a few runs by Foothills, handing the Knights an extremely rare home loss. Senior guard Kimo Ferrari had 20 points, 11 rebounds, and seven assists in the win.
The two district rivals played their first of two annual games on January 23rd. The Mavericks controlled the first half, leading 35-18 at the break. Torrey Pines regrouped in the break and stormed back with 42 second half points. Trailing by three points with the game on the line, Torrey Pines junior guard Chris Howell was fouled shooting a three-pointer with eight-tenths of a second left to play. He calmly knocked down all three shots to send the game to overtime. The Falcons controlled the overtime period with a big three-point shot from Nate Witte and a steal and dunk from Brandon Angel to ice it for a 68-63 win.
A battle between two top-ten teams at the annual Battle at the Bay. Christian entered the game having secured a huge home win over top-ranked Cathedral Catholic the night before. Parker jumped out early with eight three-pointers in the first quarter and led Christian by 20 points early in the second quarter. The Patriots worked back into the game, led by Jake Tawhiao's 21 points. Christian hung on for a one-point win and their second top-five win in 24 hours.
The Wildcats and Pirates got together to close out the regular season in front of a standing-room only crowd. The teams went back and forth for much of the first three quarters without either able to gain much of an advantage. El Camino called a timeout early in the fourth quarter after a couple consecutive baskets by the Pirates and responded with an 18-2 run to secure a 57-50 victory and wrap up Avocado East League play unbeaten.
Having scrimmaged in the preseason and played during December's Holiday Classic, the Falcons and Saints entered their playoff matchup very familiar with each other. Torrey Pines held a narrow lead after each of the first two quarters but found themselves trailing by a point heading into the final quarter. Brandon Angel knocked down two free throws with nine seconds left to play to give the Falcons a two-point lead. Following a timeout St. Augustine's Luke Haupt drove the right side of the floor but his layup attempt was off the mark, sending the Falcons back to the open division championship.
