TOP 10 SAN DIEGO SECTION GIRLS BASKETBALL RANKINGS

Week of Feb. 3, 2020

BY MARLON WELLS

There are big games on the horizon this week, and it gets started Monday at 5:30 p.m. at La Jolla Country Day with the No. 1 Torrey’s playing a non-league match against the No. 3 Barons from Bonita Vista. Both teams come into this game with momentum and playing their best basketball of the season. La Jolla Country Day has another top 10 matchup Friday against cross-town rival and No. 4 Bishop’s. Yet another top 10 matchup will take place this Friday when Cathedral faces Christian. We will keep you updated on all games as the league and playoff races get tighter.

1. La Jolla Country Day 23-1

The Torrey’s had no problems in their lone game last week, a 78-29 victory over JSerra Catholic of Orange County. The Torrey’s are still ranked No. 1 in the country and if they get past their two matchups this week they’ll head into the section playoffs feeling pretty good about their chances of winning a San Diego Open Division Championship.

NEXT UP: 2/3/20 vs Bonita Vista, 2/5/20 vs Escondido Adventist, 2/7/20 vs Bishop’s

2. Cathedral Catholic 14-10

The Dons are starting to put things together and are in control of their own destiny when it comes to winning the Western league title. Cathedral had two huge wins over top-10 ranked teams last week: a hard fought 74-66 win over No. 4 Bishop’s and a 70-56 league win over No. 10 Serra. The Dons still have one crucial game left on the schedule and that’s against league rival Christian. Good news for Cathedral though: their team leader Mazzie Harris is looking to return soon.

NEXT UP: 2/4/20 vs Mira Mesa, 2/7/20 vs Christian

3. Bonita Vista 15-7

The Barons have been putting a hurting on their league opponents this season and seem to be finding their groove as we head into the playoffs. Bonita Vista had little trouble last week in their three games: a 79-58 win over league rival Mater Dei (Chula Vista), a non-league domination of Madison 68-15 and a rout over Otay Ranch, 89-47.

NEXT UP: 2/3/20 vs La Jolla Country Day, 2/5/20 Montgomery, 2/7/20 Olympian

4. Bishop’s 13-8

The Knights stay at No. 4 this week even though they went 2-1. Their lone loss last week came to No. 2 Cathedral Catholic in a highly contested matchup, 74-66. The Knights finished the week with a 70-27 win over Francis Parker and a 70-63 victory against No. 6 Christian.

NEXT UP: 2/7/20 vs La Jolla Country Day, 2/8/20 vs Mt. Miguel

5. Mater Dei (Chula Vista) 14-7

The Crusaders went 2-1 last week beating Eastlake 81-39 and Vista Murrieta 64-53, but were downed by crosstown rival Bonita Vista in league play 58-79.

NEXT UP: 2/5/20 vs Olympian, 2/7/20 vs Otay Ranch

6. Christian 16-9

The Patriots went 2-1 last week and also saw their head coach Vickie Carrington pick up career win No. 300. Christian had wins over Otay Ranch 83-45 and Mira Mesa 67-44. Their loss came to No. 4 Bishop’s 70-63.

NEXT UP:2/4/20 vs Scripps Ranch, 2/7/20 vs Cathedral Catholic

7. La Costa Canyon 18-5

La Costa Canyon moves up one spot after exacting revenge by defeating Mission Hills decisively 67-46. They also enjoyed a 20-point win over San Marcos 68-48.

NEXT UP: 2/4/20 vs Canyon Crest, 2/7/20 vs San Marcos

8. Westview 23-1

Westview also moves up one spot after beating Del Norte 57-36 and Poway 57-45 last week. Westview is looking to go undefeated in league this year.

NEXT UP: 2/5/20 vs Rancho Bernardo, 2/8/20 vs Serra

9. Serra 12-8

Serra had a very solid week going 1-1 losing to Cathedral in a much tighter game then their previous contest with the Dons losing 56-70, then came back with a convincing victory over a strong Helix squad 65-37.

NEXT UP: 2/7/20 vs Scripps Ranch, 2/8/20 vs Westview

10. Mount Miguel 16-6

Look at who we have here! Perennial power Mount Miguel takes the No. 10 spot. Quietly winning five straight games the Matadors are making some noise. We don’t believe that they will make the Open Division but believe that they will make some major noise in Division I in the playoffs. Mt. Miguel defeated Grossmont 61-33, West Hills 56-31 and Scripps Ranch 56-47 last week.

NEXT UP: 2/7/20 vs El Capitan, 2/8/20 vs Bishop’s

DROPPED OUT: Mission Hills

Rancho Bernardo (19-5), Mission Hills (13-10), Carlsbad (17-5), San Marcos (14-8), El Camino (18-6), Scripps Ranch (13-8), Poway (16-9)
