CARMEL VALLEY, Calif. -- The fourth time was the charm for Cathedral Catholic on Saturday night. After falling short in the San Diego Section Open Division title game each of their first three appearances, the Dons imposed their will on La Costa Canyon Saturday night, sweeping the Mavericks.

“It feels so amazing,” Cathedral Catholic senior libero Anna Pringle said. “I love this team so much and I’ve wanted to win this for four years now and to do it with this team who I love with my whole heart, we’re best friends, it’s just so amazing I wouldn’t want to do it with anyone else.”

The Dons had faced the Mavericks twice during the regular season, sweeping them during both matchups, but knew they wouldn’t just hand over the trophy in a championship game.

“So, we played LCC twice this season, but we were saying none of that matters because now we’re in playoffs and everyone comes to win and it’s about who wants it more,” Pringle said.

La Costa Canyon led 6-5 in the first set before Cathedral Catholic went on a 20-10 run to grab the first frame, 25-16. The two teams found themselves tied at 16 in the second set before Cathedral Catholic went on another run, winning 25-21.

“Every single point we had to fight, and we had to battle,” Pringle said. “We love each other so we were able to do it in the end.”

La Costa Canyon led 2-0 in the third set before Cathedral Catholic went on a 20-9 run, eventually winning the set 25-16 to clinch the championship.

“This is a very good team,” Pringle said of the Mavericks. A lot of my club teammates play for (La Costa Canyon), so I have so much respect for them. We knew we were gonna have to bring it tonight no matter what even with our two wins in the past.”

Cathedral Catholic awaits their CIF State playoff seeding on Sunday but have accomplished the goal of every San Diego Section team when the season began. “To leave my senior year with a championship feels awesome,” Pringle said.
