SBLive’s LA City Section Top 10 Boys Basketball Rankings: Fairfax finishes No. 1

Fairfax took down King/Drew 76-64 to win the Open Division championship on Feb. 26.

The 2021-22 California boys high school basketball season is in the books.

SBLive’s LA City Section high school boys basketball rankings are compiled by SBLive California reporter Connor Morrissette.

1. Fairfax (16-7)

Last week: 2

Fairfax took down No. 2 King/Drew 76-64 to win the Open Division championship on Feb. 26. 

2. Birmingham (18-9)

Last week: 4

Birmingham beat No. 4 Venice 51-44 in the first round of the Open Division playoffs before losing to No. 1 Fairfax 73-66 in overtime in the semifinals. 

3. King/Drew (20-12)

Last week: 8

Kalib LaCount averaged 33.5 points per game this season and led the Golden Eagles to the LA City Section Open Division championship game. 

4. Venice (21-10)

Last week: 3

Venice lost to No. 2 Birmingham 51-44 in the first round of the Open Division playoffs, but then won four games in the state playoffs to advance to the Division 3 state championship game where they fell to Pleasant Valley 57-53. 

5. Taft (17-7)

Last week: 1

The Toreadors ended the regular season at No. 1 after finishing tied atop the West Valley League, but losing to No. 2 King/Drew in the Open Division semifinals 72-59 and then in the first round of the state playoffs drops Taft to No. 5. 

6. Narbonne (17-11)

Last week: 5

Narbonne lost to No. 5 Taft 66-60 in the first round of the Open Division playoffs. The Gaucho beat Oak Hills in the first round of the Division 3 state playoffs though, 71-70. 

7. Palisades (11-10)

Last week: 7

Palisades played No. 3 King/Drew very tight in their 53-49 loss in the first round of the Open Division playoffs. The Dolphins won a round in the D3 state playoffs against St. Pius X-St. Matthias Academy before falling to No. 1 seed Rancho Verde in round two. 

8. Grant (23-10)

Last week: 9

Grant won the Division 1 LA City Section championship 53-48 over No. 10 Westchester. 

9. El Camino Real (12-15)

Last week: 10

El Camino Real lost 62-48 to No. 1 Fairfax in the first round of the Open Division playoffs. The Royals beat San Diego High in the first round of the D3 state playoffs before losing to No. 4 Venice in the second round. 

10. Westchester (16-12)

Last week: NR

Westchester lost in the Division 1 championship game 53-48 to No. 8 Grant.
