SBLive’s LA City Section Baseball Top 10: El Camino Real jumps up to No. 3

The Royals have won three games in a row and begin their first West Valley League series of the season against Taft this week.

Here are SBLive’s sixth Top 10 LA City Section high school baseball rankings of the season. The rankings are compiled by SBLive California reporter Connor Morrissette and are released weekly.

1. Granada Hills (11-2-1)

Last week: 1

Granada Hills won one of the City Section games of the year so far 1-0 over No. 6 Roosevelt in eight innings last Wednesday. Seniors Drew Gustafson and Morgan Jennings combined to shutout the Roughriders. Nathan Isidro had the game-winning RBI. Granada Hills plays No. 4 Cleveland twice this week to open West Valley League play. 

2. Birmingham (10-3)

Last week: 2

The Patriots beat Moorpark 8-6 to earn their tenth win of the year last Friday. Birmingham plays league foe Chatsworth (No. 8) twice this week. 

3. El Camino Real (8-5)

Last week: 4

ECR has won three games in a row. The Royals begin their first West Valley League series of the season against Taft this week. 

4. Cleveland (8-5)

Last week: 3

Cleveland falling 4-3 to Grace Brethren last week drops the Cavaliers from No. 3 to No. 4. On the bright side, senior Braden Lowe is batting .478 for Cleveland this season. 

5. Palisades (7-2-1)

Last week: 5

Palisades fell to No. 1 Granada Hills 7-1 last week, but the Dolphins had won six games in a row prior to the defeat. Senior Jacob Herrera is batting .571 for Palisades this season. 

6. Roosevelt (12-5)

Last week: 6

Roosevelt lost a 1-0 heartbreaker in eight innings against No. 1 Granada Hills last week. Senior pitcher Lino Zepeda threw 7 and 2/3 innings striking out 13 in the defeat. Zepeda has a 0.56 ERA on the season. 

7. Sylmar (8-4-1)

Last week: 7

Sylmar picked up a marquee 5-4 win over No. 8 Chatsworth on March 5th. In the last week, the Spartans have won three straight. Sophomore Matthew Benzor is batting .444 and has hit a home run this year. 

8. Chatsworth (8-5)

Last week: 8

Chatsworth beat Burbank 9-2 on Saturday. The Chancellors begin a two game series against No. 2 Birmingham this week. 

9. San Pedro (6-5)

Last week: 9

The Pirates have won three games in a row. San Pedro plays Marine League rival Carson twice this week and then No. 5 Palisades on Saturday. 

10. Hamilton (11-4)

Last week: 10

Hamilton is 10-1 against LA City Section teams this season. The Yankees' best win came against Taft 8-7 on March 2nd. Junior Adrian Gonzalez is batting .478 for the Yankees this season. 

Honorable mention: Legacy, Taft, LACES
