El Camino Real fires boys basketball coach Joe Wyatt after 15 years at the school

Wyatt had been the head coach at ECR since 2013

Fifteen years ago Joe Wyatt wheeled his son JD around the El Camino Real gym in a stroller during varsity boys basketball practices.

JD is now a freshman at El Camino Real, and he played for his dad this past season.

But Joe won't get the opportunity to coach his son at ECR next year. Last Friday Wyatt was fired by the El Camino Real High School administration after nine seasons as the head boys basketball coach.

It is unclear why Wyatt was fired. SBLive reached out to El Camino Real High School Executive Director David Hussey for comment on Wyatt's firing, but Hussey "did not have anything to add."

Wyatt is beloved by his players and a support rally for him is being organized for April 28, which is the same day as El Camino Real's next board meeting.

Wyatt started coaching at El Camino Real in 2006 as an assistant. In 2008, ECR hired current Harvard-Westlake head coach David Rebibo as head coach. When Rebibo left El Camino Real in 2013, Wyatt was named head coach at the school.

In 2014, Wyatt won a Division 1 LA City Section title in his first season in charge.

Rebibo has already offered Wyatt a spot on the Harvard-Westlake staff for next season, he said in a text message.
