FULLERTON– The first ever SBLive-HIU SoCal Senior All-Star competition took place on Saturday at Hope International University, and was kicked off by a 3-Point Contest.

Each contestant got a rack of 12 basketballs worth one point for each make, and a money ball rack of four balls worth two apiece, giving them 60 seconds to score a maximum of 20 points per round. The final round would only consist of two players out of 18 entrants.

Brea Olinda wing and Colorado - Mesa signee Sophia Williams had her work cut out for her multiple times throughout the event. 

Troy's Isabella Pearson took the lead with nine points as the fourth contestant, and HIU commit Andrea Javier of Fairmont Prep followed it up by acing the money ball rack to earn 10 points. Two players later, Williams tied Javier with 10 points, which would also be matched by Kate Bobadilla (Capistrano Valley Christian) and Myla Scott of Pacifica (Oxnard) before HIU-bound Alyssa Kubo (Esperanza) went off for 13 points. 

That forced a four-way tie for second place, so a tiebreaker had to determine who would join Kubo in the finals. The sudden death round consisted of 30 seconds to take eight shots worth one point each, and Williams won it.

As the leading scorer of the first round, Kubo had the choice to go first or second in the finals, and elected to defer. Going first, Williams missed her first four shots, and the rest was history. She knocked down all 12 shots on the remaining three racks, including going 4-4 on the money balls, to blow the roof off with 16 points and win comfortably.

That made Williams the first ever SBLive-HIU 3-Point Contest champion, and Kubo the event's first ever runner-up.
