SBLive’s LA City Section Baseball Top 10: Chatsworth ends the season at No. 1

The Chancellors won the Open Division championship 2-0 over Birmingham at Dodger Stadium.

1. Chatsworth (16-15)

Last week: 8

Chatsworth relied on pitching to win the school's first City title since 2009. Jose Ruedas threw a complete game shutout striking out six in the Chancellors' 2-0 Open Division championship win over Birmingham from Dodger Stadium. 

2. Birmingham (22-11)

Last week: 2

The Patriots were the lone City Section team to win a regional playoff game following their Dodger Stadium setback. 

3. Granada Hills (23-5-1)

Last week: 1

Granada Hills won the West Valley League with a 9-1 record, but the Highlanders were upset in the quarterfinals of the Open Division playoffs 6-4 against Chatsworth. Granada Hills went a combined 3-0 against El Camino Real and Roosevelt this season, so they finish the year No. 3. 

4. El Camino Real (18-13)

Last week: 3

ECR lost a heartbreaker in the Open Division semifinals 2-1 to Birmingham. Oscar Lopez threw 6 2/3 innings in the game, but the Royals fell courtesy of a Johan Ceja walk off single.

5. Roosevelt (24-7)

Last week: 4

Roosevelt nearly made it to Dodger Stadium, but lost to Chatsworth 4-3 after the Chancellors scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning of the two team's semifinal game at USC. Roosevelt pitcher Lino Zepeda and catcher Matias Nolasco were two of the Section's best players this spring. 

6. Carson (18-11)

Last week: 6

Carson won the Marine League for the first time since 2018 and they nearly knocked off eventual champion Chatsworth in the first round of the playoffs. The Colts lost 11-8. The team was left frustrated by a few calls from the umpire in the game. 

7. San Pedro (19-9)

Last week: 7

San Pedro beat No. 8  Poly, No. 9 Palisades, and split with No. 6 Carson this year. The Pirates lost to No. 2 Birmingham 5-0 in the second round of the Open Division playoffs. 

8. Poly (20-8)

Last week: 10

Poly won the East Valley League with a 12-0 record and the Parrots nearly made it to the Open Division semifinals. Poly fell 1-0 in eight innings in the quarters to No. 4 El Camino Real. 

9. Palisades (21-7-1)

Last week: 9

Palisades went 12-0 in the Western League and earned a bye in the Open Division playoffs. The Dolphins fell to Roosevelt in the Open Division quarterfinals 1-0. 

10. Marshall (25-4)

Last week: 5

Marshall won 20 games in a row to end the regular season, but the Barristers lost to No. 8 Poly in the first round of the Open Division playoffs 5-2.
