SBLive's LA City Section Top 10 Football Rankings: Franklin jumps up to No. 6

The Panthers took down Northern League rival Eagle Rock 30-13 last week.

SBLive's LA City Section football rankings will be released every Monday throughout the 2022 season. Enjoy!

PRESEASON RANKINGS | WEEK 1 | WEEK 2 | WEEK 3 | WEEK 4 | WEEK 5 | WEEK 6

1. San Pedro Pirates (6-0)

Last week: 1

Last game: 36-6 win over Dymally

Next game: Oct. 7 vs. Gardena

San Pedro's defense continues to play at an elite level. The unit is giving up an average of 8.7 points per game this season.

2. Birmingham Patriots (2-4)

Last week: 2

Last game: 47-0 win over Taft

Next game: Oct. 7 vs. No. 1 Granada Hills

Birmingham has won two straight games following last week's blowout West Valley League win over Taft. The Patriots haven't lost a league game since 2017.

3. Banning Pilots (3-4)

Last week: 4

Last game: 40-14 win over No. 9 Carson

Next game: Oct. 14 at Narbonne

What a whirlwind week for the Pilots! In the span of seven days, Banning forfeited a win against Garden Grove Pacifica due to using an ineligible player and then had the ineligible player suspended an additional game. That resulted in the Pilots threatening to not play last week's game against Carson, but ultimately Banning took the field and walked away with a 40-14 rivalry win. The victory pushes the Pilots back up to No. 3 in the City.

4. Roosevelt Roughriders (6-0)

Last week: 3

Last game: 56-0 win over South East

Next game: Oct. 7 vs. Legacy

The key to beating Roosevelt is to stop the run, but so far this season no team has been able to figure that out. In the Rough Riders 56-0 win over South East two weeks ago, Roosevelt totaled 310 yards on the ground. The Rough Riders made the Open Division playoffs in the City Section last year and they look like a good bet to return in November.

5. Venice Gondoliers (4-2)

Last week: 6

Last game: 39-7 win over Fairfax

Next game: Oct. 7 vs. Westchester

Venice is a sleeper Open Division title contender. In last week's 39-7 win over Fairfax, senior QB Paul Kessler completed 20 of 28 passes for 309 yards and four touchdowns.

6. Franklin Panthers (6-0)

Last week: 7

Last game: 30-13 win over No. 8 Eagle Rock

Next game: Oct. 7 at Kennedy

Franklin picked up a big 30-13 rivalry win over Northern League foe Eagle Rock last week. The game was tied 7-7 at halftime, but the Panthers pulled away in the second half to win. Senior receiver Hector Ceballos had 10 catches for 157 yards and two touchdowns.

7. Garfield (5-2)

Last week: 9

Last game: 42-8 win over Huntington Park

Next game: Oct. 7 vs. Bell

When Garfield has won this season, they've won by at least 28 points in each game. The East LA Classic against No. 4 Roosevelt can't come soon enough. The game is scheduled for Oct. 21 at the LA Coliseum.

8. Eagle Rock (6-1)

Last week: 5

Last game: 30-13 loss against No. 6 Franklin

Next game: Oct. 7 vs. Wilson

Eagle Rock dropped its first game of the season against No. 6 Franklin last week. The loss puts the Eagles right on the Open Division/Division 1 playoff line in the City. Eagle Rock's best win this season came in September against No. 10 Granada Hills 37-22.

9. Carson (3-4)

Last week: 8

Last game: 40-14 loss to No. 3 Banning

Next game: Oct. 6 vs. Narbonne

A week after beating up Cleveland 55-12, Carson had a tough time against No. 3 Banning falling 40-14. The loss drops the Colts to No. 9.

10. Granada Hills Highlanders (4-1)

Last week: 10

Last game: 42-7 win over Chatsworth

Next game: Oct. 7 at No. 2 Birmingham

The Highlanders started off West Valley League play with a 42-7 win over Chatsworth. Senior University of Utah commit Dijon Stanley rushed for 182 yards and two touchdowns. He's the best player in the City.
