Last week's winner: Antoine Evans, Sacred Heart Cathedral

THIS WEEK’S CALIFORNIA COACH OF THE WEEK NOMINEES:

Kyle Biggs, Central-Fresno: His Grizzlies, previously ranked sixth in the Central Section, not only defeated the visiting and top-ranked Clovis West Eagles, but they beat them 45-0 Friday to improve to 6-3 overall and 3-1 in Tri-River Conference. They also knocked Clovis West from the ranks of the unbeaten. “It was a great effort,” Biggs said. “They did everything we asked them to do, believe in each other and believed in themselves and showed how good we are capable of being.”

Jon Ellinghouse, Sierra Canyon-Chatsworth: The Trailblazers went on the road to Chaminade and took down the previously undefeated Eagles in impressive fashion winning 49-14.

John Heffernan, Elk Grove: The Thundering Herd (6-3, 4-1) clinched at least a share of the Delta League championship and exacted revenge at the same time with a 34-21 win vs. visiting and the Sac-Joaquin Section’s 10th-ranked team Jesuit-Carmichael (7-2, 4-1). Last season Jesuit defeated Elk Grove 70-35. “I’m ecstatic,” Heffernan said of the win. “We've come a long way as a team. Great effort.”

Lorenzo Hernandez, Garfield-Los Angeles: After coming up short last season, Hernandez made some second half defensive adjustments to beat arch rival Roosevelt 16-8 in the 87th East LA Classic inside the LA Coliseum. In total, 45,000 fans watched the game. "We just kept believing," Hernandez said. "Our defensive staff does an amazing job and they prepared for this moment. This was great."

Mike Jacot, Clovis North: His Broncos (5-4) pulled off a shocker in the Central Section, knocking off No. 2 Buchanan 28-21 behind a balanced running attack and the efficient passing of quarterback Mario Kosma. Buchanan dropped to 7-2.

John Joyner, Mater Dei Catholic-Chula Vista: Joyner led the Crusaders to their fifth straight shutout in Friday’s win over Bonita Vista.

Mark Krail, Los Gatos: The Wildcats (6-2, 4-0) hammered arch-rival and Central Coast Section’s No. 2 team Wilcox-Santa Clara 28-7 to clinch the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League/PAL De Anza Division. Los Gatos limited an offense that averaged more than 420 yards per game to just 249 and shutout the Chargers the last three quarters. Will Brennan caught just three passes but for 154 yards and two touchdowns.

Robert Metzger, Oak Hills-Hesperia: Up in the high desert, Metzger used a brilliant game plan to defeat Mojave River League foe Apple Valley 41-27 and stay unbeaten at 9-0.

Mike Ramos, Washington-San Francisco: Perhaps the biggest turnaround team in Northern California, Ramos led the Eagles (7-1, 4-0 Academic Athletic Association) to a 22-0 win over defending state 7-A champion Balboa. Sam Dunn, the nephew of former NFL star linebacker Bill Romanowski, had three tackles for loss, two sacks and a caused fumble.

John Regalia, St. Ignatius-San Francisco: Coming off a very disappointing 10-0 loss to arch-rival Sacred Heart Cathedral, the Wildcats pulled off the biggest upset of the West Catholic Athletic League season with a 24-21 win at Archbishop Mitty-San Jose, which came in 6-1 and ranked fourth in the Central Coast Section. The Wildcats (3-5) won it on an 18-yard field goal by Cooper Lucey and got 235 yards passing and three touchdowns from sophomore quarterback Soren Hummel.

Chris Varner, West Ranch-Valencia: Varner's led West Ranch to the school's first ever 10-0 season and Foothill League championship. The Wildcats are the first 10-0 team in the state.
