SBLive's California Power 25 boys basketball rankings: Top 5 teams to battle in the Southern Section Open

Remaining three teams in vaunted tournament also among the state's Top 15; No. 9 Inderkum makes big move after win over St. Joseph

The Southern Section's Open Division should be a blast. And likely wreak a little havoc with SBLive's Power 25 California boys basketball rankings.

The eight-team pool-play tournament will take two weeks and opens on Friday, with a fun opening-night tussle pitting eighth seed and reeling Sierra Canyon (Chatsworth) at rolling Corona Centennial, the top seed and No. 1 team in the state.

SEE COMPLETE SOUTHERN SECTION/OPEN DIVISION SCHEDULE

Centennial has won 15 straight since a 65-63 loss to New Jersey power Don Bosco Prep. The Huskies (25-3) haven't lost to a California team this season and are the defending state Open Division champion.

Sierra Canyon, plagued by injuries and inconsistency, has lost three of its last five and four of seven, including an 88-61 contest to Notre Dame-Sherman Oaks in the semifinals of the Mission League tournament last week.

The return of McDonald's All-American Bronny James, the son of LeBron James, was welcome news for the Trailblazers. He scored a team-high 19 points, But on the bench was 5-star junior Isaiah Elohim, who is out indefinitely with an ankle sprain.

* Sierra Canyon dropped from No. 6 to No. 10 in the state rankings with the 27-point loss.

* The other Open Division teams, where they are seeded and where SBLive ranks them in the state: Harvard-Westlake (No. 2 seed, No. 2 California), West Ranch (No. 3, No. 3), Bishop Montgomery (No. 4, No. 4), Notre Dame (No. 5, No. 5), St. John Bosco (No. 6, No. 8) and St. Bernard (No. 7, No. 14).

* Friday's matchup is a premier one for individual star power as well, with James going against Centennial's Jared McCain, a 5-star senior headed to Duke. He scored 41 on Senior Night last week in a 77-71 win over Roosevelt (Eastlake), which moved into the Power 25 with the impressive defeat. Both McCain and James share massive social media followings.

* Like Centennial, Harvard-Westlake of Studio City (28-1) hasn't lost in this calendar year after two more wins last week to take the Mission League tournament title, 75-71 over Notre Dame in the championship. The Wolverines, winner of 12 straight, were in control most of the way thanks to a combined 47 points from Trent Perry and Jacob Huggins. Notre Dame made a late surge behind Duke-bound guard Caleb Foster (26 points) and Gonzaga signee Dusty Stromer (19).

* The Los Angeles Times and MaxPreps computer rankings have had Harvard-Westlake as the top ranked team in Southern California most of the season. Centennial has maintained the top spot on SBLive and CalHiSports. One clear common opponent that likely proved decisive with the Southern Section was Harvard-Westlake's lone defeat, 59-56 to Liberty (Henderson, Nev.), a team Centennial beat 90-64 at the Nike Extravaganza 10 days ago.

* Sac-Joaquin Section's Inderkum has jumped all the way to No. 9 in the state, following a 79-76 neutral court win over previous No. 9 St. Joseph (Santa Maria), behind a huge outing from 6-foot-5 senior Jalen Glenn (24 points, 19 rebounds, six assists). That offset another monster effort from one of the nation's top sophomores, St. Joseph's 6-6 Tounde Yessoufou (30 points, six rebounds, three steals). The Tigers have won 16 straight.

* Two other SJS teams moved into the rankings, including No. 22 Jesuit-Carmichael (20-4), which now has the state's No. 2 senior recruit, Stanford signee Andrej Stojakovic, back from injury. The Marauders have won eight straight and 11 of 12, including a 63-52 triumph over No. 23 Archbishop Riordan-San Francisco without Stojakovic. The team's only loss in that stretch was to No. 21 Folsom (68-47). Cole Epperson, a 6-8 junior, has been dominating since Stojakovic's injury and now gives Jesuit a very potent 1-2 punch.
