The weather was cool by Fresno County standards, but the marks were hot and steamy. 

Day one of the 103rd CIF State Track and Field Championships was intense and impressive with many top-end California and national marks displayed at Veteran's Stadium on the campus of Buchanan High School in Clovis. 

The top nine in most events moved to Saturday's finals, with 12 advancing in the 800, 1600 and field events.  

Of the 1,400 athletes who qualified, only about one-third advanced to the finals. 

Under temperatures that reached low 80s by the running events to the low 60s by the meet's end, there weren't too many upsets, surprises or mishaps. 

Among some of the highlights: 

* Rodrick Pleasant, trying to become the fourth male to double in the 100- and 200-meter dashes in back-to-back years, is set up nicely after winning both his heats handily. He recorded the top 100 time of the day in 10.36 seconds — well off his state record of 10.14 — as he eased in the final 10 meters to win Heat 1 over surprise runner-up Andrew Fu, who crossed in 10.59 seconds from Lane 9. 

Pleasant, El Cerrito's Robert Stitts (10.50), South Torrance's Anthony Flowers (10.52) and Long Beach Jordan's Jordan Washington (10.53) won their heats to advance. The logjam from there was severe with Jordan Coleman, of Granada Hills, taking the ninth and final spot at 10.60. 

Coleman's actually mark was 10.591, which was vital because he just edged La Costa Canyon's Jason Wells (10.594), Live Oak's Christian Hauge (10.598) and Franklin-Elk Grove's Ian Dossman (10.598) for the final spot.

* Pleasant also eased up to win his 200 heat in 21.19, which was actually behind Heat 2 winner Dijon Stanley, of Granada Hills, and Heat 3 winner Nickolas Miller, of Clovis North, who each crossed in 21.09. 

* The girls sprints was also exciting, highlighted by heat three of the 100 where defending champion Reign Redmond, of Carson, came from behind to edge defending 200 champion Brazil Neal, of Serra-Gardena, 11.47 to 11.53. Other heat winners were Oaks Christian's Niya Clayton (11.52), Serra's Mia Flowers (11.73) and St. Ignatius-San Francisco freshman Ellie McCuskey-Hay (11.81).

* Neal came back to record the best 200 time in 23.80, though the mark was wind-aided at 23.80. Redmond finished second (23.99) in the fourth heat behind Culver City's Joelle Trepagnier (23.95). Both will advance. 

 * Granada Hills kept its hopes for a boys team title well alive by recording by far the fastest 400 relay time of 40.49, over Heat 3 winner Acalanes-Lafayette (41.29). Stanley, also the top qualifier in the 400, was part of that relay win along with the No. 4 qualifying 1600 relay team. 

* Ventura sophomore Sadie Engelhart, trying to conserve energy, in her attempt to pull off a grueling 800 and 1600 double, got by in both, qualifying second in the 800 (2:10.59) and 10th in the 1600 (4:50.64), where she is the overwhelming favorite. She's run 4:34,50 in the 1600, more than eight seconds faster than anyone in the field. 

* The big scare of the night came in the girls 800 where defending champion and national leader Mackenzie Browne took the 12th and final qualifying spot, finishing in 2:12.72. Browne, who has gone 2:03.07, and Engelhart figure to battle it out in a matchup of national leaders. 

* A big disappointment was in the boys 400 where one of the favorites, San Diego Section champion Adren Parker, of Helix, did not start after a leg injury suffered in the 4x100 relay. Parker was supposed to give Stanley a big challenge after winning the SDS finals in 46.48. Helix won the SDS 4x100 D1 title in 42.04, but did not qualify for finals in Friday's state trials.
