Final CIF NorCal softball regional playoff bracket roundup: Hollister, Willow Glen, Central Catholic, Capital Christian Live Oak win titles

Top seed Hollister outlasts defending champion Saint Francis; Haybalers among five first-time regional champions

The 2023 CIF Northern California softball regional playoff brackets have been completed.

DIVISION 1 BRACKET

Championship: Hollister 1, Saint Francis 0 (nine innings)

An infield error scored winning pitcher Sophia Mariottini in the ninth inning to give the top-seeded Haybalers (30-3) the home victory over the defending champion Lancers (28-4). Mariottini allowed just two hits, a double to Rebecca Quinn and single to Carly Cummings, and struck out just one.

Kate Munnerlyn was solid in defeat, allowing four hits with 11 strikeouts and three walks. Under swirling, windy conditions, pinch runner Kyla Hignel scored from second base when a flip to second on a grounder with two out was missed. It was the second time in a week, Mariottini shut out the Lancers, winning the Central Coast Section title game 4-0 at Saint Francis. 

The Haybalers finished on a 10-game win streak and Mariottini finished 28-2 with a 1.59 ERA. Sophomore Grace Peffley was the team's leading hitter at .515 with 52 hits in 101 at-bats with 34 runs, 19 RBI, five doubles, two triples and two home runs. She also stole 29 bases.

DIVISION 2

Willow Glen 6, Notre Dame-Salinas 5

Senior catcher McKenna Campbell drilled an RBI double scoring Katelynn Dilbeck in the bottom of the seventh inning to give top seed Willow Glenn a walk-off win and first regional title. It was the second double of the game for the Miami of Ohio signee.The  

“It’s been our goal since freshman year,” Campbell told San Jose Mercury reporter Glenn Reeves after the game. “We worked so hard and it’s just a dream come true.”

Winning pitcher Alanna Clincy, a freshman, struck out 11 but walked nine and gave up seven hits, including home runs to Addison Amaral and JulieAnn Lopez. But after a five-run fourth, that included RBIs from Faamaaiu, Aleki Ulu and Haley Ocumen, the Rams (23-7) got the game-winner in the seventh. Notre Dame, the third seed, finished 22-8.

DIVISION 3

Central Catholic-Modesto 7, Ponderosa 0

The second-seeded Raiders got revenge after Ponderosa beat them in the Sac-Joaquin Section finals the previous week 1-0. On Saturday, devastating senior Randi Roeling was un-hittable, striking out nine while throwing a no-hitter. She also hit a two-run homer. Roeling finished the season 21-3 with a 0.59 ERA while leading the state in strikeouts with 375 in 178.2 innings. She had struck out a combined 33 in the two previous wins, 8-1 over Pleasant Valley and 3-0 over Madera. She had 14 strikeouts but gave up five hits in a 1-0 loss to Ponderosa in the SJS title game. Roeling more than made up for it on Saturday. 

Teammate Taryn Calderon, a sophomore, added two doubles and three RBI and Mya Robles and Emori Machado added two hits each. Ponderosa finished stellar season 25-5-1.

DIVISION 4

Capital Christian 6, Orestimba 1

Freshman pitcher Ayla Tuufa struck out 12, walked two and gave up just two hits, leading the third-seeded Cougars (19-5) to the home title win. Tuua also had a double and triple at the plate and two RBI, while teammates Savanna Newman, Alannah Tuula, Abigail Rhee and Nani Lose-Mahina also drove in runs for the champions. Jacquelyn Lujan had two hits and knocked in the only run for Orestimba (25-5).

DIVISION 5

Live Oak 13, North Salinas 3

The top seed and host Acorns lashed 15 hits, including three each from Oliva Mixco, Jasmine Mixco and Dre DeJesus to win a title game that ended in the fifth due to the 10-run mercy rule. Jordan Lara added a two-run homer and winning pitcher Hailey Nguyen struck out 10 in five frames. Live Oak finished 15-11 and second-seed North Salinas finished 15-13.
