Jerry De Fabiis is new Assistant Commissioner of CIF's Southern Section

Incoming CIF Southern Section Commissioner Mike West announced today that Colony High School Athletic Director Jerry De Fabiis has accepted the post of Assistant Commissioner, starting July 1. 

“I am excited to have Jerry De Fabiis join the rest of our team in the Southern Section office," West said. "Jerry has been a strong supporter and contributor to both the Southern Section and State CIF in the sport of basketball. He has been a member of the Southern Section on Basketball Advisory Committee for 15 years and the state Basketball Advisory Committee for 10. ... He has a passion for education on based athletes and an enthusiasm for the position that we feel will benefit our whole organization." 

De Fabiis has been the AD at Colony since 2019 and the head basketball coach since the program's inception in 2001. He coached three seasons at Ontario before coming over.  He won his 500th career game on Jan. 19, 2022 and last season his squad went 22-8 after going 25-3 in 2021-22. Under De Fabiis, Colony were Southern Section finalists in 2005, 2008 and 2017, and champions in 2006, 2017 and 2019. 

His team also won a regional title in 2019 and were league champions from 2006 to 2023.

"It has always been an honor and privilege to work with the CIF Southern Section promoting and furthering education-based athletics. I look forward to working with new commissioner Mike West and the entire office of the Southern Section to continue to serve our member schools and promote our student-athletes." 

West, the principal at King-Riverside, was named new commissioner on April 13, replacing Rob Wigod who is retiring after 12 years on the post (Wygod was first hired as assistant commissioner starting in 2000).  West is the organization's 10th commissioner. 

Another highly basketball man left his coaching perch for administration is North Coast Section commissioner Pat Cruickshank. He coached 34 seasons between San Leandro and Heritage-Brentwood, where he won a NCS D1 title in his final year in 2017-18. 

He took an assistant commissioner spot at NCS the next year and one year later, Gil Lemmon retired as commissioner and Cruickshank was selected as his replacement in 2019-20.
