SBLive Sports' 2023 All-Central Coast/San Francisco Section Baseball team

Player of the Year Michael Castaneda is one of four players for CCS Division 1 champion Valley Christian to make the star-studded squad

June is gone. The season has been over for nearly a month. Almost all media groups have offered their postseason awards.

Here is ours:

PLAYER OF THE YEAR

P/INF Michael Castaneda (Valley Christian)

A Northern Kentucky signee, Castaneda did it all for the Warriors, who finished 31-4 and captured West Catholic Athletic League regular season and playoff titles, a ninth Central Coast Section crown and placed second in the CIF Northern California Division 1 playoffs. Castaneda was the WCAL Pitcher of the Year, going 13-1 with a 1.19 ERA with 59 strikeouts and 59 hits allowed in 82.1 innings. He also hit .372 with 35 hits, 30 RBI and 12 doubles.

PITCHERS

Gabe Gaeckle (Aptos)

The first-team All-State hurler improved upon last season’s excellent numbers, finishing 8-0 with a scant 0.59 ERA in 59.1 innings. The Arkansas-signee struck out 117 batters and walked nine, finishing with double digit strikeouts in each of his final eight outings.

Finean Hunter-Kenney (Lowell)

Led the Cardinals to San Francisco Section and CIF Northern California Division 5 titles as the ace, going 6-3 with a 2.10 ERA and 91 strikeouts in just 63.1 innings.

Luka Pintar (Mitty)

A junior, Pintar has already committed to San Diego State. He went 6-1 with a 1.73 ERA for the xx-xx Monarchs. He had 74 strikeouts and 51 hits allowed in 73 innings.

Devin Saltzgaber (Sacred Heart Prep)

The sophomore couldn’t have done any better, going 12-0 with a 1.12 ERA and five complete games (three shutouts).

Landon Stump (Live Oak)

The UCLA commit struck out 86 in 60.1 innings with 10 walks while posting a 1.28 ERA. He was Co-Pitcher of the Year in the BVAL Hamilton.

CATCHERS

Liam Mahoney (Lowell)

The San Francisco Chronicle’s San Francisco Player of the Year led the Cardinals to a NorCal D5 championship by hitting a team-best .450 (36 of 80) with seven doubles, five triples and two home runs. The junior also led SFS with 35 RBI. He threw out 19 of 41 would-be base stealers.

Jordan Ortiz (Valley Christian)

Only a sophomore, Ortiz was first-team All-WCAL by hitting .390 with 32 hits for the WCAL and CCS D1 champions.

INFIELDERS

Jarren Advincula (Mitty)

The San Diego State signee hit .374 with 34 hits. Had at least two hits in 13 of his team’s 29 games.

Ryan Burton (Capuchino)

The junior standout was a first-team All-PAL member, after hitting a whopping .455 with 40 hits, 24 RBI and 22 runs. He also did a nice job on the mound with a 4-2 record and 1.86 ERA.

Chase Knight (Bellarmine)

The Fresno State signee led the Bells to a CCS Division 2 championship by hitting .382 with 34 hits and 25 runs.

Carter Johnstone (Los Gatos)

The junior is already a Cal State Fullerton commit. He hit .464 in 2023 with 29 RBI while hitting four home runs for the 20-8 Wildcats.

PJ Moutzouridis (Valley Christian) 

The West Catholic Athletic League Player of the Year hit .352 and drove in a CCS-best 35 runs. The senior is also considered a master shortstop. He’s headed to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.

OUTFIELDERS

Tatum Marsh (Valley Christian)

Only a junior, Marsh has already committed to Stanford. He had 43 runs, stole 38 bases and was an All-WCAL member for the CCS D1 champs.

Davis Phillips (Menlo-Atherton)

The senior was the Peninsula Athletic League Player of the Year after hitting .400 and scoring 26 runs. He had seven doubles and two homers.

Tayden Phillips (Lincoln-San Jose)

Led the Lions to a 16-9 record after hitting .441 (30 of 68) with five doubles, nine triples and 29 RBI. The speedy senior also stole 23 bases in 24 attempts.

UTILITY

Archie Horn (St. Ignatius)

The only freshman on the squad, Horn helped lead the Wildcats to a CIF Northern California D2 title by hitting .357 and going 4-2 with a 1.86 ERA. He's already committed to Stanford.

Josh Mayol (Hillsdale)

The junior outfielder and pitcher hit .316 with 25 hits, seven doubles and three home runs. He was also 4-0 on the mound with 45 strikeouts in 42.1 innings with a 2.98 ERA. He also made just one error all season and had six outfield assists.

Ethan Jackson (Carmel)

Led the Padres to a CCS Division 3 title by belting five home runs and driving in 29 runs, both team highs. A versatile player who could play catcher or either corner of the infield.

Javi Manilla (Westmoor)

What a season for the junior who went 5-1 on the mound with a 1.83 ERA, while hitting .483 with 28 hits and 26 runs.

Trent Toole (Stevenson)

The 6-foot-2, 175 pounds senior led the Pirates to a CCS D6 title by hitting .414 with eight doubles and 31 RBI, and going 7-1 on the mound with a 1.12 ERA. Toole is a three-sport standout.

Evan Williams (Branham)

Went 13-2 with 1.37 ERA with 81 strikeouts, 18 walks in 86.2 innings. Led his team to a 22-8 record by also hitting .383 with 36 hits, 25 RBI and 23 runs.
