The 2021-2022 high school girls basketball season has been one to remember for Al Honor and his Lake Highland Prep Lady Highlanders.

Honor led the Highlanders to their fifth FHSAA girls basketball state championship - and their third straight - last month.

On Thursday, Honor was named the Florida High School Girls Basketball Coach of the Year. Dr. Phillips head coach Anthony Jones finished second and Bishop Kenny head coach Will Mayer finished third.

“It is an absolute honor to receive this award” Honor said. “These girls have pushed me to be a better coach and an even better person."

Next week, Honor will lead the Highlanders into the inaugural state champions invitational in Tampa where they’ll face Woodward Academy (Georgia) on April 8 at 2 p.m. ET. The game will be broadcasted nationally on ESPNU.

“We have been so blessed to have him as our coach," Lake Highland Prep senior forward Nyla Harris said. "We couldn’t ask for a better role model."
