Port Charlotte hands Manatee its first loss of 2022 in Week 5 South Suncoast recap

The Pirates stifled the Hurricanes’ offense and rolled to a blowout win on the road

What did the previous four weeks of the season give us hints to heading into Week 5? What we thoughts would be plenty, ended up being not so much. If clues are what we go by, trying to still figure out some teams has remained a total mystery. Port Charlotte had themselves a ball heading into Manatee County on Friday night. Playing tenacious defense and timely offense, the Pirates handed the Hurricanes their first loss of the season. Did we think the ship was going to sink over at Venice? Nah, of course not. John Peacock and that staff have it all handled as the Indians fought back from a 14-0 deficit to defeat the Seminoles. Plenty of other matchups along the South Suncoast had us wandering our eyes every which way, so we will dig into the top games and give you the scores from Week 5.

The Indians bounced back after losing two games in a row to beat one of the state’s top teams in Sanford Seminole.

Week 5 results

Venice 24, Sanford Seminole 17: Its not how you start they say, but how you finish and that’s the story for the Indians facing off versus the Seminoles. Trailing 14-0, Venice battled back to defeat previously undefeated Sanford Seminole in a hotly contested matchup. Two quick touchdowns in the opening quarter had many wondering how this game was going to go. A touchdown from Florida State commit Darren Lawrence and a scoring pass from quarterback Luke Rucker had Seminole moving things along. Venice quarterback Brooks Bentley would not be denied as he threw a touchdown to wide receiver Ryan Matulevich and Keyon Sears.

Port Charlotte 29, Manatee 6: The Pirates sent a message to the rest of the South Suncoast that they are not a team to be trifled with on Friday versus the Hurricanes. Port Charlotte (3-2) opened up the scoring with a 5-yard run from running back Cameron Becerril and at the end of the opening quarter expanded on the lead with an Edd Guerrier touchdown. It was a long night for Jacquez Green’s Hurricanes up against the Pirates’ stiff defense. Port Charlotte quarterback Bryce Eaton connected with running back Justice Becerril on a 49-yard scoring throw to build a 22-0 in the third quarter.

Calvary Christian 31, Sarasota 28: Close but no cigar for the Sarasota Sailors when they took on the Calvary Christian Warriors of Clearwater. Calvary Christian built a sizable halftime lead at 24-7, but Sarasota would come roaring back in the second half. A blocked field goal returned for a touchdown pulled the Sailors within 24-21 and then eventually taking a 28-24 lead with 5:17 remaining in the game. Warriors’ quarterback Jacob Drackett would come through with a touchdown pass to Sean Cuono to pull off the win for Calvary Christian.
