Bartow defeating Auburndale highlights the slate of games in Polk County last week

Auburndale 16, Bartow 28

BARTOW – Bartow’s defense forced three first-half turnovers to help lead the Yellow Jackets to a non-district win over Auburndale on Friday at Memorial Stadium.

Bartow picked up a pair of 25-yard field goals from Kason Mullis. Jase Thomas recovered an Auburndale fumble in the end zone for a touchdown and the Bloodhounds’ Robert Gaskins was later tackled in the end zone for a safety to take a 15-6 halftime lead.

The Bloodhounds scored on a 52-yard scoop-and-score touchdown by Bryson Jiles in the first half, a 21-yard field goal by Ethan Tran in the second half, and a 23-yard touchdown run by Dayrel Glover in the second.

Bartow quarterback Kaleef Valentine connected with Jayson Wiliams on a 51-yard touchdown pass in the second half, and later in the game, Valentine scored on a 1-yard run. Bartow senior running back Trequan Jones rolled for 124 yards on 20 carries.

Haines City 40, Discovery 0

HAINES CITY – Haines City improved to 3-1 on the season with a shutout win on the road at Discover.

The Hornets picked up an 18-yard touchdown run and an 80-yard kickoff return for a touchdown from Ke’shon Tyler.

Additionally, Tramel Coward scored a pair of touchdowns while Samauri Wilson and Anthony Smith each scored one touchdown.

Frostproof 29, Avon Park 22

AVON PARK – Frostproof reeled off 21-unanswered second-half points to rally past Avon Park on Friday.

The Frostproof defense created two Avon Park turnovers in the second half, one a 30-yard scoop-and-score recovery by Daiveon Pittman that proved to be the game winner.

Frostproof senior quarterback Nathan Jenkins scored on a 5-yard run, Donavan Solomon scored on a 10-yard run and Isaiah Sheppard scored on a 1-yard run.

“Our guys showed a lot of resilience and a lot of character," Frostproof head coach Rod McDowell said."They rallied around each other. Andrew Garcia was a great possession receiver and he kind of gets our game ball.”

"They had some quick guys and that really gave us some trouble. We came out flat in the first half and I have to do a better job of getting us up. The bounces went their way in the first half and the bounces went our way in the second half.”

Lake Placid 52, Lake Region 40

EAGLE LAKE – Lake Placid sophomore Keveun Mason rushed for 363 yards and five touchdowns to lead the Dragons past Lake Region in a non-district clash.

Mason, who holds offers from FAMU and South Florida, also scored on a 2-point conversion run and had a 98-yard kickoff return for a touchdown called back.

Lake Region sophomore quarterback Kalvin Johsnon threw for five touchdowns and 361 yards. He connected with Javarious Johnson twice for scores on throws of 58 and 35 yards, Dawon Ried twice on scoring strikes of 30 and 42 yards and Brenton McKinney on a 38-yard touchdown pass. Demetrius Autery rushed 14 times for 45 yards for Lake Region.

Lakeland Christian 28, Hardee 21

HARDEE – Lakeland Christian improved to 4-0 with a non-district road win at winless Hardee.

LCS quarterback Parker St. John was 14-of-18 passing for 236 yards with two touchdown strikes. Dre Hughes caught five passes for 50 yards and one touchdown. TC Bell picked up 66 yards on two catches while Killian O’Neal rushed for two touchdowns to round out the Vikings' attack.

LCS hosts Spring Hill Bishop McLaughlin Friday in a non-district game while Hardee travels to Clewiston.

Santa Fe Catholic 21, Mulberry 41

MULBERRY – Mulberry picked up its first win of the season Friday after getting 439 yards rushing.

Lloyd Knight led the way with three touchdowns, two 2-point conversions and 125 yards on the ground.

Mulberry running back Deuntae Burgess picked up 117 yards rushing with two touchdowns while wide receiver Tye Crawshaw scored two 2-point conversions and Grandin Cox also scored on a 2-point conversion.

St. John Lutheran 0, All Saints 49

WINTER HAVEN – All Saints Academy improved to 5-0 with a huge shutout win over St. John Lutheran in a non-district 8-man football game Friday at Jahna Field.

Saints’ Dontravius Bell had 122 yard receiving with two touchdowns. Senior quarterback Daunte Giles had nine rushes for 140 yards with three touchdowns. He also threw three passes for 125 yards and two touchdowns, including two scoring strikes to Clauderis Bell and Dontravious Bell.

All Saints defeated Classical Academy 57-6 on Monday in a make-up game.
