Week 6 Friday night Florida high school football rewind

Chiles picks up minor upset win over Mosley; Wakulla needs overtime to get by Rickards

It was a strange Friday night of high school football for the Sunshine State, with primarily most of Florida sidelined from playing games due to Hurricane Ian forcing school closures and the impact on local communities. The area hit the hardest by Hurricane Ian was the Southwest Florida region and only time will tell on when school openings will resume between Charlotte, Collier and Lee counties. The areas that were able to get games in last night was in the panhandle region and over in Broward-Dade counties. We have the scores and a handful of games to recap in our Friday night high school football rewind.

It was a different feel to Friday night football in Florida.

It was a different feel to Friday night football in Florida.

Chiles 28, Mosley 21: Some might call it an upset because of the contrasting records, but Chiles has been a solid team all season long, but the win-loss didn’t indicate that. Timberwolves’ running back Jaylin Jones scored the go-ahead touchdown with under one minute to go as Chiles upended Mosley at home. Mosley took a 21-6 lead but Chiles fought their way back into the contest and eventually tied it 21-21 on a Ryan Sumner scoring run.

Blanche Ely 36, Fort Lauderdale 12: Restoring the roar at Blanche Ely took another step in the right direction as the Tigers’ defense stifled the Flying L’s en route to win No. 4 on the season. Fort Lauderdale lost their first game of 2022. The Tigers had a 16-6 lead at halftime and out-scored the Flying L’s 20-6 in the second half.

Wakulla 21, Rickards 20: The War Eagles needed overtime to hold off the Raiders to pickup win No. 5 on the season and improved to 5-1. Wakulla running back Xavier Blake scored on the War Eagles’ first overtime possession and though Rickards also had a touchdown in overtime, the Raiders failed on the potential game-winning 2-point try.

Columbus 54, Miami High 14: The Explorers didn’t look like a team that lost really any practice time due to Hurricane Ian as they rushed out to a 48-7 lead at halftime and never looked back. Columbus scored on the opening kickoff when Darriel Harper took it back to pay dirt. Explorers’ quarterback Alberto Mendoza threw two first quarter touchdowns to give Columbus a 20-0 lead after one.

Niceville 13, Crestview 9: Down 9-0, the Eagles had to come back to defeat the Bulldogs and improved to 6-0 on the season. Harrison Orr and the offense couldn’t get anything going for the better part of three and a half quarters. DJ Shorts scored the go-ahead touchdown on an 18-yard scamper.
