Just about every school has returned to the field of play from the South Suncoast region for the exception of North Port, whom hasn’t played a game since September 23rd. Port Charlotte didn’t have a game this week, but will play its second game since Hurricane Ian this week when they face Parrish Community.

With everyone else back to playing, there’s been plenty of interesting action that’s taken place throughout Manatee, Sarasota and Charlotte counties during that stretch. The always fierce rivalry game between the Venice Indians and Sarasota Riverview Rams lived up to the billing. The Rams, despite having only winning one game this season, came into the game played at Sarasota High School giving the Indians everything they could handle.

Venice is now 4-2 on the season with a playoff berth clinched and district title in hand

Venice eventually pulled off the victory, with the Indians continuing to get back into championship form. The Indians clinched a district championship, playoff berth and have won 15 of the last 16 meetings with the Rams. Wide receiver Keyon Sears ended up with over 100 yards receiving in the victory.

The Manatee Hurricanes welcomed into Bradenton one of the top teams in the state when Cardinal Gibbons rolled into town. Jacquez Green’s bunch lost to the Chiefs, but ultimately kept up with one of Florida’s best. Sarasota Booker played a rare Saturday afternoon game against Wiregrass Ranch and the Tornadoes took advantage of a slew of turnovers committed by the Bulls leading to the win.

In another game pitting a South Suncoast team versus a club from Pasco County, Parrish Community faced Wesley Chapel Cypress Creek in a thriller. The Bulls lost in overtime, with a interception being thrown costing Parrish Community a shot at the win. The Palmetto Tigers have been the hottest team coming out of the break and continued their winning ways, stifling the Lake Gibson Braves.

Charlotte traveled over to Palm Beach County to face 1A-Rural power Pahokee and the Fightin’ Tarpons held their own. Though coming up short, Charlotte has remained a competitive team throughout the season. Sarasota looked sharp when they traveled over to Manatee County to face Braden River. The Sailors’ defense held strong, holding the Pirates to just a field goal in the win.

Out-of-Door Academy just keeps winning and kept their undefeated season alive after rolling past Bradenton Christian. Another private school game that stood out was between Cardinal Mooney and Bishop Verot. The Cougars record may be 1-6 on the year, but Cardinal Mooney has played one of the toughest schedules amongst Class 1A-Suburban teams. The narrowly lost to the Vikings in one of the best games of the night.

We’ve got the Week 9 South Suncoast region scores from the past week as we take another step closer to the final two weeks of the regular season.
