North Broward Prep's Jacob Tannenbaum scores six against Cooper City

COCONUT CREEK, FLORIDA - Junior captain Jacob Tannenbaum scored six goals, including four during an 11-goal run, to power North Broward Prep to an 18-4 rout of Cooper City in boys lacrosse action, Thursday.

The Eagles’ 18 goals tied a season-high while their four goals allowed tied a season-low. 

An opening lead on a goal by Cooper City’s Drew Chin at the 11:36 mark of the first quarter was short lived as North Broward Prep’s Alec Dubin found the back of the net with 9:42 remaining in the period. From there, the Eagles would dominate the time of possession and hold the Cowboys without another goal until the 5:05 mark of the second quarter. Dubin would add another two goals and two assists to finish with five points on the night.

“Streaking at the right time is always a good thing,” said North Broward Prep head coach Josh Blumenthal. “Our goal this year is to have a winning season. We are one game away from that. When we played these guys about a month ago it was 12-6. To come out here with the balanced scoring is what impressed me the most. Jacob is going to get his goals because he is a top notch player, but the balance is great. Having some guys play different positions was really fun for us tonight.”

Much of Cooper City’s offensive struggles were directly the cause of North Broward Prep’s tough defense. The Cowboys went over 18-½ game minutes without scoring and netted just one goal in the second half. The Eagles also received a strong showing in goal from Daniel Katz. The junior recorded nine saves while adding a goal and an assist later in the game. Overall, Katz has collected 94 saves and holds an 0.846 save percentage.

“Our whole entire defense is brand new, never played before,” added Blumenthal. “To have this turnaround with that level of inexperience, coupled with now the experience they have gotten in a short amount of time is awesome. It is cliché to say, but the future is bright. I could not be happier and prouder of the effort of the guys so far.”

Cooper City’s best offensive stretch of the game came on back-to-back goals from Chin and senior Rex Kotzen to cut North Broward Prep’s lead to 11-3 with 4:35 remaining in the second quarter. From there, three closing period goals by the Eagles pushed back the lead to 14-3 heading into the half.

North Broward Prep also received three-goal performances from freshman Isaac Alexy and sophomore Chandler Ripps. Sophomore’s Jacob Gilbert and Matthew Routman also scored a goal each. Of the Eagles’ contributions, much came from underclassmen. North Broward Prep only lists one senior on its roster.

A team leader, Tannenbaum leads North Broward Prep with 51 goals. Of his six against Cooper City, a majority came long distance. Tannenbaum also scored with his backhand and off spin moves. With his help, North Broward Prep will look for its first winning season since 2017 with its next victory.

“It was a great team win, everyone contributed,” said Tannenbaum. “Our goalie got to score a goal which is great. Last time we played this team we beat them 12-6. This time its 18-4 tonight which is a great win. Just an amazing effort from all the boys. We are definitely improving in practice and working hard.”

North Broward Prep improves to 6-5 while Cooper City falls to 5-6.
