The playoffs are the time for players to shine, and South Florida so many did in South Florida in district tournament play.

At SBLive Sports Florida, we’re recognizing the top players in our South Florida baseball Player of the Week poll for May 1-6.

As always, these polls are intended to be fun, and draw attention to as many deserving players as possible.

The candidates are as follows:

Andrew Alvarez, West Broward: In the Class 7A-District 14 tournament, Alvarez had a double and two hits in a win over Flanagan, and in the district championship game against Western, he had a home run, drove in three runs and scored three times.

Bryan Barcenas, Pembroke Pines Charter: In the Class 5A-District 15 tournament, Barcenas struck out 10, and allowed one hit in six scoreless innings against Hialeah.

Adrian Fernandez, Sagemont: In the Class 2A-District 15 semifinals, Fernandez went five innings, striking out seven and he didn’t allow a run.

Devin Fitz-Gerald, Marjory Stoneman Douglas: Douglas cruised to the Class 7A-District 13 championship, and Fitz-Gerald homered in each of the two games the Eagles played. The junior shortstop had three RBIs in the tournament.

Johnathan Gomez, Calvary Christian Academy: Gomez came up big in the Class 3A-District 13 tournament. In the semifinals, he had two hits and drove in two against Chaminade-Madonna. And in the title game, he had an RBI single that tied the game. An unearned run also scored on the play.

Christian Hamilton, St. Thomas Aquinas: Hamilton homered and drove in four runs against Piper in Class 6A-District 14 play, and he scored a run in the championship game win against South Plantation.

Talan Holiday, American Heritage Plantation: Holiday threw five hitless innings, and struck out 12 in the Patriots 13-1 win over South Fork. Heritage went on to win the Class 5A-District 14 title.

Tugg Hollandsworth, Cardinal Gibbons: Hollandsworth belted two homers in a twin against Somerset Academy (Boynton Beach), and in a loss to American Heritage Delray Beach, he had two doubles and three RBIs.

Antonio Jimenez, Archbishop McCarthy: The senior shortstop had two doubles and three RBIs against American High, and in the Class 5A-District 15 championship win against Pembroke Pines Charter, he homered and drove in three.

George Lombard, Gulliver Prep: Lombard hit for the cycle against Florida Christian in Class 3A-District 15 play.

Brandon Lorenzo, Western: A freshman, Lorenzo had a two-out, two-run, walk-off single in a win over Coral Glades, and he followed that up with a two-run single in a victory against Taravella. Recognition also goes to his teammate, Tyler Jenkins, who had a homer and five RBIs in a championship game loss to West Broward.

Riley Luft, North Broward Prep: In the Class 3A-District 12 title game, Luft had two hits and drove in two runs, and he pitched a scoreless inning with a strikeout.

Lester Martinez, Columbus: Martinez came up big in the Class 7A-District 15 title game against Braddock, belting a home run and driving in four.

Devin Mila, NS University School: Mila came through with a walk-off single to beat Pine Crest.* Anthony Quigley, Taravella: In five innings, Quigley struck out nine in a loss to Western.

Joey Roberts, Flanagan: In 5 2/3 innings, Roberts struck out six and allowed one run on three hits in a win over Cypress Bay.

Luis Rodriguez, Doral Academy: In the Class 6A-District 16 championship, Rodriguez struck out seven and allowed one run in 5 1/3 innings.
