Here are the candidates for SBLive’s Alabama high school athlete of the week for Nov. 30-Dec. 6 as nominated by coaches and fans. Tanner Bailey, Gordo football: The junior quarterback passed for 222 yards and two touchdowns in the 4A state final, but the Green Wave came up short in a 35-20 loss to Handley.

Myles Butler, Montgomery Catholic football: The senior made six catches for 109 yards and two touchdowns in the 3A title game, but the Knights came up just short against Fyffe, falling 21-16.

Ka’javeion Byrd, Pickens County football: The Tornadoes lost to Linden, 32-8, in the 1A title game, but Byrd, a senior, caught eight passes for 121 yards and a touchdown and recorded 11 tackles on defense. 

Jakobe Fields, Mars Hill Bible football: The senior recorded seven tackles — including 2.5 for loss — and a sack in the 2A state final, helping the Panthers beat Abbeville, 56-14.

Griffin Hanson, Mars Hill Bible football: Hanson, a freshman quarterback, threw for 222 yards and two touchdowns and was named MVP of the 2A state final as the Panthers blew out Abbeville, 56-14.

Trevor Hardy, Thompson football: The junior kicker was the MVP of the 7A championship game, booting a 35-yard field goal as time expired to give the Warriors a dramatic 29-28 win over Auburn.

Peyton Higgins, Mars Hill Bible football: The senior rushed for 156 yards, picked up 49 more yards on a catch and scored on a 76-yard kickoff return as the Panthers defeated Abbeville 56-14 for the 2A title.

Christian Lewis, Pleasant Grove football: Lewis, a senior, caught six passes for 145 yards and two touchdowns in the Spartans’ 29-21 loss to St. Paul’s Episcopal in the 5A state final.

Caleb McCreary, Montgomery Catholic football: The freshman quarterback threw for 188 yards and two touchdowns in the 3A state final, but the Knights fell short in a 21-16 loss to Fyffe.

Justus McDaniel, Mars Hill Bible football: The senior did a little of everything in the Panthers’ 2A title-clinching 56-14 rout of Abbeville, rushing for 75 yards and four touchdowns, catching a pass and making three tackles.

Ga’Quincy McKinstry, Pinson Valley football: The star senior earned MVP honors of the 6A state championship game, finishing with five catches for 89 yards — including the go-ahead touchdown in the fourth quarter — as the Indians defeated Spanish Fort, 23-13.

Tae Meadows, Handley football: Meadows, a junior, led the Tigers to a 35-20 win over Gordo in the 4A championship game by rushing for 264 yards and four touchdowns.
