SBLive Power 25: St. Xavier moves into national football rankings after winning Ohio state title
The 2020 high school football season continued across the country this week with 17 SBLive Power 25 teams taking the field.
Fourteen of the squads that were included in last week’s Power 25 won, with the exceptions of Pickerington Central (Ohio), Bergen Catholic (Oradell, N.J.) and Cedar Hill (Texas). Pickerington Central fell in the Division 1 state championship game in Ohio to St. Xavier (Cincinnati, Ohio) 44-3. Bergen Catholic was upset by arch-rival Don Bosco Prep (Ramsey, N.J.) 21-20 and Cedar Hill lost to No. 6 Duncanville 28-14.
Pickerington Central and Bergen Catholic are no longer ranked. Cedar Hill dropped to No. 25.
After their demolition of Pickerington Central, St. Xavier is now ranked No. 23. Cathedral (Ind.) is newly ranked this week as well, at No. 22. They're still alive in the 5A playoffs in Indiana and beat St. Xavier 25-22 on Sept. 18.

The SBLive Power 25 rankings are compiled by SBLive reporter Connor Morrissette based on observations and conversations with an extensive network of coaching and media sources across the country.
As with everything in the COVID-19 era, the rankings will be fluid week-to-week and only include teams that are scheduled to play football in 2020. We will publish separate rankings later in the year for all schools scheduled to play football in 2021.
Here are the 35 states already playing football or scheduled to play football in 2020: Alaska, Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Idaho, Mississippi, Montana, Texas, Utah, Indiana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Tennessee, Iowa, Nebraska, Wyoming, Missouri, Ohio, Oklahoma, West Virginia, Georgia, Florida, Kansas, New Hampshire, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, Maine, Wisconsin, South Carolina, New Jersey, Michigan, Delaware, Minnesota, Colorado and Louisiana.
Here are the states and districts that have officially moved high school football to 2021: California, Connecticut, District of Columbia, Massachusetts, North Carolina, Virginia, New Mexico, Nevada, Washington, Oregon, Illinois, Maryland, Hawaii, Rhode Island, New York and Vermont.

1. IMG Academy (Bradenton, Fla.), 7-0

Ranking rationale: IMG has been off for a couple of weeks, but they end their season next week against TRU Prep Academy (Miami Gardens, Fla.). Below is our ranking rationale for the Ascenders following their most recent win over No. 13 Northwestern (Miami, Fla.):
Running back Kaytron Allen scored IMG’s first TD from six yards out which got the ball rolling on a 28-point first quarter for the Ascenders. Northwestern was supposed to be a stiff test for IMG, but the Ascenders rolled winning 49-14 to cement their spot at the top of the Power 25.
IMG has six players listed in the top 50 of 247Sports.com’s 2021 Florida recruiting rankings and nine listed on the website’s top 50 for 2022. No one in the country playing in 2020 can compete with that type of roster.
2. North Shore (Houston, Texas), 8-0

Last result: 58-0 win over Summer Creek (Houston, Texas)

Ranking rationale: North Shore blew out 2-4 Summer Creek 58-0 to stay at No. 2 this week.
The Mustangs are 38-1 over the last three seasons. They’ve won two 6A Division 1 championships in a row in Texas. North Shore’s best player is 2021 QB Dematrius Davis, an Auburn commit.
3. Chandler (Ariz.), 6-0
Next game: Nov. 20 vs. No. 24 Hamilton (Chandler, Ariz.)
Last result: 42-19 win over Highland (Gilbert, Ariz.)
Last week’s ranking: No. 3
Ranking rationale: Chandler is loaded with talent, from quarterback Mikey Keene (UCF commit) to running backs Eli Sanders (Boise State commit) and Nesbitt, plus wide receiver Jalen Richmond (Boise State commit). The Wolves have the best receiving corps in Arizona and the best defense, led by defensive end Brandon Buckner, an Oregon commit.
Keene threw for 290 yards and four TDs while completing 81% of his passes on Friday. Next week, the Wolves face their first real test of the season against No. 24 Hamilton.

4. Grayson (Loganville, Ga.), 9-0

Last result: 37-0 win over Newton (Covington, Ga.)

Ranking rationale: Grayson is playing its best football of the season at the best time of year. The Rams are rolling. Last week's 37-0 win over Newton clinched a Region 4 title.
Senior running back Phil Mafah (Clemson commit) caught a 44-yard TD pass in the win and Grayson’s defense pitched a shutout. They haven't allowed a point in six straight quarters.

Ranking rationale: St. Joseph’s Prep dominated in their final regular season game of the year two weeks ago. Ohio State commits Kyle McCord and Marvin Harrison Jr. connected for two touchdowns in the win. Expect St. Joe’s to stroll to a Pennsylvania state title this season.

6. Duncanville (Texas), 6-1

Last result: 28-14 win over No. 25 Cedar Hill
Last week’s ranking: No. 6
Ranking rationale: Duncanville's defense is one of the best in the nation. That unit shutout Cedar Hill in the second half of their game on Friday. Junior defensive end Omari Abor had a sack and was a pest all night for Duncanville. He has a handful of Division 1 offers. Senior defensive lineman Tyler Quinn, a Colorado State commit, recovered a Cedar Hill fumble in the fourth quarter which stopped a potential scoring drive.
We rank Duncanville as the second best team in Texas. Their lone loss came to No. 1 IMG Academy on Oct. 10, 41-14.
7. Colquitt County (Norman Park, Ga.), 7-0
Next game: TBD playoffs
Last result: 41-0 win over Tift County (Tifton, Ga.)
Last week’s ranking: No. 7
Ranking rationale: Colquitt County ends the regular season perfect having won all seven of their games by at least two touchdowns. The Packers will be behind only No. 4 Grayson among the list of 7A title favorites in Georgia.
Colquitt County has four players listed in the 2021 Georgia high school football recruiting rankings, led by No. 42 Lemeke Brockington, a Minnesota wide receiver commit. The Packers beat Lowndes, a preseason top two team in Georgia, 40-10 two weeks ago.
8. Corner Canyon (Draper, Utah), 13-0
Next game: Nov. 20 vs. Lone Peak (Highland, Utah) (6A championship)
Last result: 45-30 win over East (Salt Lake City, Utah) (6A playoff semifinals)
Last week’s ranking: No. 8
Ranking rationale: In 2020, Jaxson Dart put together one of the best regular seasons from a high school quarterback we’ve ever seen. In ten games, the senior completed 68 percent of his passes for 3,345 yards and 48 touchdowns. He threw just two picks.
In the playoffs, Dart has kept up that level of production. In last week’s win over East, he completed 17 of 24 passes for 304 yards and five touchdowns. His first TD pass set the single season record for touchdown passes in Utah history. He now has 63.
Dart and Corner Canyon take on Lone Peak in the state championship this week. Corner Canyon beat Lone Peak in the regular season 35-25; that was the Knights only loss on the year. If Corner Canyon wins again, Dart will go down as one of the greatest high school quarterbacks of all-time.
9. Thompson (Alabaster, Ala.), 12-0
Next game: Nov. 20 vs. Hoover (Ala.) (7A semifinals)
Last result: 42-16 win over Hewitt-Trussville (Ala.) (7A playoffs)
Last week’s ranking: No. 12
Ranking rationale: Thompson is the best team in Alabama. They beat Hoover, the state's second best team, 39-23 on Oct. 23 and now those two will meet up again in the 7A semifinals.
In the first game, Hoover running back Jarrett Crockett rushed for 121 yards and three scores. Quarterback Conner Harrell tossed two more touchdowns and stud 2022 defensive lineman Jeremiah Alexander had three tackles for loss. If Thompson wins again this week, they'll cement their place in the top ten of the Power 25 and become heavy favorites to win a state title against the winner of Auburn and Central.

10. Westlake (Austin, Texas), 7-0
Next game: Nov. 12 vs. Austin (Texas)
Last result: 45-7 win over Bowie (Austin, Texas)
Last week’s ranking: No. 9
Ranking rationale: Another week, another easy win for Westlake. Junior quarterback Cade Klubnik threw for three touchdowns in the victory, with two of them going to Grey Nakfoor.
The Chaparrals have won all seven of their games by at least four scores this season. Westlake plays Lake Travis (Austin, Texas) on Nov. 27. That game will provide a better understanding of exactly how good Westlake is this season. Expect their other remaining regular season games to be comfortable wins.
Westlake won the 6A Division 2 title in Texas a year ago and should make a deep postseason run again in 2020.

11. De Smet Jesuit (St. Louis, Mo.), 5-0

Ranking rationale: De Smet only played two regular season games before entering the playoffs, but they've won comfortably in their three playoff games thus far. Running back Rico Barfield ran for 168 yards on 18 carries and scored three times in the Spartans' quarterfinal victory on Friday. He's committed to Ball State.
Overall, eight De Smet seniors are committed to Division 1 programs. Last season the Spartans went 14-0. They’re trying to win back to back state titles.
12. Ryan (Denton, Texas), 6-0
Next game: Nov. 19 vs. Heritage (Frisco, Texas)
Last result: 49-8 win over The Colony (Texas)

Ranking rationale: Following Ryan’s impressive 23-20 win over Guyer on Sept. 2, the Raiders have reached the lighter portion of their schedule. In Ryan’s win over The Colony two weeks ago, Memphis QB commit Seth Henigan threw for 332 yards and five touchdowns. Oklahoma commit Billy Bowman Jr. and Texas commit Ja’Tavion Sanders combined for 229 yards and three scores. The Raiders are a consensus top five team in Texas.
13. Northwestern (Miami, Fla.), 3-1
Next game: Nov. 20 vs. American Heritage (5A playoffs)
Last result: 28-20 win over Key West (Fla.) (5A playoffs)

Ranking rationale: Northwestern has six players listed in the top 110 of 247Sports’ 2021 Florida player rankings. Wide receiver Romello Brinson (Miami commit) leads the way at No. 23. The Bulls won a 5A title last season in Florida.
Northwestern survived a scare from Key West this past week, but we feel that they're still one of the best teams in the nation. Here's a game breakdown courtesy of the Miami Herald's David Wilson:
Northwestern got a scare Friday in Key West, but hung on to beat the Conchs to begin its quest for a fourth straight state championship.
The Bulls fumbled late in the fourth quarter to give Key West a chance to drive and tie the game. Northwestern, however, came up with a final stop to win a Class 5A play-in. The Bulls will face Plantation American Heritage next Friday in the Region 4-5A quarterfinals.

Ranking rational: Allen followed up a sloppy win two weeks ago with a really impressive victory over Guyer this past week. They're the biggest movers in this week's Power 25.

The Eagles scored on consecutive 52-yard runs by junior Jaylen Jenkins and senior General Booty and then got Jordan Johnson in space for an 82-yard sprint with 11:40 left in the second quarter for a 28-10 advantage.
Three runs, 186 yards and 21 points — Allen never looked back.
If the Eagles play like that every week then watch out, they'll contend for a 6A championship in Texas.

15. Trinity (Louisville, Ky.), 6-0

Ranking rationale: Trinity did not play last week or the week before due to a positive COVID-19 test within their program. Here is our ranking rationale for the Shamrocks from when they played their last game:
Nathan McElroy passed for 257 yards and threw four touchdown passes to Jack Mitchell in Trinity’s win. The Shamrocks start 11 seniors on defense for a unit that is one of the best in the nation, so it’s not a surprise Trinity held Bowling Green to just a touchdown on Friday.
Trinity won a 6A championship in Kentucky last year and is in a great position to do so again in 2020.
16. Dutch Fork (Irmo, S.C.), 7-0
Next game Nov. 20 vs. Carolina Forest (Myrtle Beach, S.C.) (5A playoffs second round)
Last result: 42-7 win over Summerville (S.C.) (5A playoffs first round)
Last week’s ranking: No. 15
Ranking rationale: Dutch Fork has won four straight state championships. A year ago, the Silver Foxes went 14-0-1 to win South Carolina’s AAAAA state crown.
Dutch Fork and Summerville were tied 7-7 in the second quarter, but then the Silver Foxes rattled off 35 points in a row. Senior quarterback Will Taylor threw for 206 yards in the win.
Dutch Fork hasn't lost in 47 straight games. Expect them to once again run the table in South Carolina this season.
17. St. Peter’s Prep (Jersey City, N.J.), 4-0
Next game: Nov. 23 vs. Seton Hall Prep (West Orange, N.J.)
Last result: 25-7 win over Paramus Catholic (N.J)
Last week’s ranking: No. 17
Ranking rationale: St. Peter’s Prep’s game against Bergen Catholic was cancelled two weeks ago due to COVID-19 and the Marauders were off this past week.
St. Peter’s Prep is our No. 1 team in New Jersey. In their win four weeks ago over Paramus Catholic, junior running back Sam Slade rushed for 94 yards and two touchdowns.
St. Peter’s Prep won the Non-Public Group 4 championship in New Jersey last season beating Don Bosco Prep 21-14. Non-Public Group 4 is one of the toughest championships to win in the country and the Marauders have a shot to repeat in 2020.
18. Archbishop Hoban (Akron, Ohio), 10-0
Next game: Nov. 20 vs. Washington (Massillon, Ohio) (Division II state championship game)
Last result: 28-14 win over Avon (Ohio) (Division II semifinals)
Last week’s ranking: No. 19
Ranking rationale: Kharion Davis intercepted two Avon passes in the final two minutes of Friday's game, one of which he returned for a 61-yard touchdown that clinched the victory for Hoban. The Knights sacked Avon's quarterback nine times.
On offense, running back Victor Dawson rushed for 110 yards and two touchdowns.
Archbishop Hoban takes on 10-1 Washington this week in the Division 2 state title game, the team that ended the Knights' season a year ago in the regional finals.
“We felt that pain the whole year," Hoban linebacker Damon Ollison told Cleveland.com. We’ve got a lot of returning starters on defense, so we used that fire to not feel that pain again.”
Following Pickerington Central's loss to St. Xavier, Archbishop Hoban is our new No. 1 team in Ohio.
19. Center Grove (Greenwood, Ind.), 12-0
Next game: Nov. 20 at Ben Davis (Indianapolis, Ind.) (6A semifinals)
Last result: 38-0 win over Warren Central (Indianapolis, Ind.) (6A regional championship)

Ranking rationale: Undefeated Center Grove dominated Warren Central 38-0 on Friday. Senior running back Carson Steele rushed for 181 yards and three touchdowns in the win. Center Grove is the favorite in Indiana’s 6A playoff classification. The Trojans give up fewer than seven points per game on average this season.
20. Tompkins (Katy, Texas), 6-0
Next game Nov. 19 vs. Mayde Creek (Houston, Texas)
Last result: 24-19 win over Katy (Texas)
Last week’s ranking: 21
Ranking rationale: It had been 12 years and 75 games since Katy had last lost a district game, but that streak ended on Nov. 5 thanks to Tompkins.
Tompkins’ upset of Katy propelled the Falcons into last week's Power 25. Joshua McMillan II caught eight balls for 146 yards and three touchdowns in the win. 2021 Alabama QB commit Jalen Milroe completed 15 of 21 passes for 211 yards and the three touchdowns to McMillan. Tompkins is now a clear team to pay attention to in Texas’s 6A class.
21. Central (Miami, Fla.), 3-1
Next game: Nov. 20 vs. Lely (Naples, Fla.)
Last result that wasn't a forfeit win: 14-0 win over Edison (Miami, Fla.)
Last week’s ranking: 25
Ranking rationale: Central has only played six quarters of football so far in 2020, but they’re our No. 3 ranked team in Florida and are 6A state title contenders in the state.
The Rockets have four players listed in the Top 80 of 247Sports’ 2021 Florida recruiting rankings led by Tennessee linebacker commit Terrence Lewis, who’s at No. 6.
Central beat a good Edison squad 14-0 three weeks ago, but the two teams only played two quarters due to lightning. Since that win, the Rockets have won two games by forfeit. On Oct. 23, Central fell to No. 13 Northwestern 21-14. Their resume may seem light right now, but a 6A state title in Florida is certainly Power 25 worthy.
22. Cathedral (Indianapolis, Ind.), 11-1
Next game: Nov. 20 at Castle (Newburgh, Ind.) (5A quarterfinals)
Last result: 39-6 win over Whiteland (Ind.) (5A playoffs)

Ranking rationale: St. Xavier entering the rankings means that Cathedral has to be ranked as well thanks to the Fighting Irish's 25-22 head to head win on Sept. 18. Cathedral's lone loss came to No. 19 Center Grove on Oct. 16. The Fighting Irish tried to win the game on a 4th and 1, didn't convert and then gave up a last second touchdown.
Cathedral's top player is 2021 receiver Camden Jordan, a Louisville baseball commit. He caught a touchdown in Friday's playoff win over Whiteland. Jordan holds the Fighting Irish's single season touchdown reception record.
23. St. Xavier (Cincinnati, Ohio), 10-2

Last result: 44-3 win over Pickerington Central (Division 1 state championship)

Ranking rationale: St. Xavier flirted with the Power 25 early in the season but losses to Brownsburg (Ind.) and No. 22 Cathedral (Indianapolis, Ind) put the Bombers off our radar. But since the defeat to Cathedral, St. Xavier has rattled off eight wins in a row, culminating in their demolition of Pickerington Central in Friday's state title game.
St. Xavier scored 30 points in the first quarter, which is more than they had put up in their previous two playoff wins combined.
"We've been talking all year long that one of these days we're going to put a game together," St. Xavier coach Steve Specht told Cincinnati.com. "If you saw us this year we score a lot of points, but we give up a lot of points. Then, at the end of the year, we weren't giving up many points. Boy, we picked the right time to put it together!"
Brogan McCaughey threw four touchdown passes to Jalen Patterson in the win. McCaughey finished 25 of 39 for 291 yards and four TDs. Senior Penn State commit Liam Clifford had three catches for six yards, but he received a lot of Pickerington Central's attention on defense which opened things up for McCaughey.
24. Hamilton (Chandler, Ariz.), 6-0
Next game: Nov. 20 at No. 3 Chandler (Ariz.)
Last result: 42-36 win over Higley (Gilbert, Ariz.)
Last week’s ranking: 24
Ranking rationale: Hamilton's most impressive win came against Saguaro (Scottsdale, Ariz.) on Oct. 23 and they've won every game since. The Huskies face off against Arizona's top team, No. 3 Chandler, this week.
Hamilton's defense was great in the Saguaro game. The Huskies didn't allow the Sabercats to score any points on offense. Hamilton will need a similar defensive performance this week to have a chance against Chandler. Hamilton's star 2022 quarterback Nicco Marchiol will need to have a big game too.
25. Cedar Hill (Texas), 5-1
Next game Nov. 20 at Waco (Texas)
Last result: 28-14 loss to No. 6 Duncanville
Last week’s ranking: 20
Ranking rationale: Cedar Hill's loss to No. 6 Duncanville drops the Longhorns to No. 25. A few websites that produce Texas in state rankings currently have Lake Travis (Austin, Texas) and Cy-Fair (Cypress, Texas) ahead of Cedar Hill. We put Cedar Hill ahead of those two due to strength of schedule. Cedar Hill's wins over Aledo and DeSoto are much better than either of Lake Travis' or Cy-Fair's top victories.
Power 25 No. 10 Westlake has a weak strength of schedule too, but they're ranked where they are due to being a unanimous preseason top five team in the state. Lake Travis plays Westlake on Nov. 27 and Cy-Fair plays undefeated Bridgeland (Cypress, Texas) on Nov. 27. Those games will clear up where exactly we should place these teams, but for now, we're sticking with Cedar Hill as the state's seventh best team.
In Friday's defeat to Duncanville, Cedar Hill's Kaidon Salter completed 13 of 30 passes for 133 yards and a touchdown. He also carried the ball 13 times for seven yards and a TD. His stats weren't eye popping, but Salter's low completion percentage doesn't tell the whole story.
At halftime, Cedar Hill and Duncanville were tied 14-14.

FIGURING OUT FLORIDA
With the playoffs underway in Florida and many teams only playing a couple of regular season games, it’s been harder than ever to properly assess teams in the state. St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) was a preseason top three team in the country, but then lost to Cardinal Gibbons (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) in their second game of the year. Cardinal Gibbons lost their next game against American Heritage (Plantation, Fla.) who fell to St. Thomas Aquinas two weeks ago.
Is your head spinning yet?
Because there isn’t a clear top team out of that grouping, none of them are ranked this week. A longer regular season would have given us a clearer picture of exactly where these teams stack up in the hierarchy of Florida high school football, but that didn’t happen due to COVID-19.
Central is ranked this week despite only playing six quarters of football and being 3-1 (two forfeits and a lightning delay have caused the limited game action). That definitely looks weird, but their one loss was to No. 13 Northwestern (Miami, Fla.) by one score. Northwestern is a known commodity and that result coupled with Central’s 14-0 win over a good Edison (Miami, Fla.) team was enough to give the Rockets the Power 25 nod in our eyes.
The beauty of rankings, and it will hopefully still be true in a COVID-19 shortened season for these teams, is that the postseason will provide a better framework on exactly how to rank Florida. When the dust settles, there will be winners and there will be losers. The winners will be ranked and the losers will miss out, just like every year. We just have to hope no one we’re monitoring has their season cut short due to COVID-19. That would throw a wrench in everything.
TEAMS ON THE OUTSIDE LOOKING IN
- St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale, Fla) (3-1): The Raiders have the talent to be a Top 10 team in the country, but a 17-10 defeat to Cardinal Gibbons (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) on Oct. 23 is a definite stain on their resume.
- Cardinal Gibbons (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) (4-1): Beating St. Thomas Aquinas was a major upset, but then falling to American Heritage shows just how good high school football in Florida is and how challenging it will be to rank these teams in a shortened year.
- Hoover (Ala.) (11-1): Hoover lost to No. 9 Thompson 39-23 at the end of the regular season. They meet again this week in the playoffs in a rematch with much more at stake.
- Lowndes (Valdosta, Ga.) (7-1): No. 7 Colquitt County beat up a good Lowndes team two weeks ago. This past week, the Vikings squeaked passed Camden County 28-21. They're trending in the wrong direction.
- Katy (Texas) (6-1): Katy’s youth showed in their 24-19 defeat to No. 20 Tompkins two weeks ago, but they bounced back nicely with a 41-13 win over Katy Taylor.
