Top Arizona HS football games – Week 8
Hamilton (6-0) at Chandler (6-0)
The Battle of Arizona Avenue takes on national significance Friday night. Both teams are ranked in this week’s SBLive Power 25 — the Huskies at No. 24, the Wolves No. 3 — and ESPNU added the game to its GEICO High School Bowl Series. Last year’s matchup went down to the final play before Chandler prevailed to extend a win streak that has reached 32 games.
Centennial (5-2) at Liberty (5-2)
The battle between Peoria District schools will have a large say in the final Open and 6A rankings. The Coyotes sit just outside the Open Division watch list but are sixth in the 6A rankings, while the defending 6A champion Lions are No. 7 in the Open rankings entering the weekend.
Corona del Sol (7-0) at Mountain View (Mesa) (6-1)
Can the Aztecs continue their Cinderella run all the way to qualifying for the Open Division? They are 10th in the Open rankings, but a win over the Toros — No. 8 in 6A after suffering their first loss last week against Basha — could give them enough points to vault into the top eight before the AIA committee makes its final call.
Casteel (4-3) at Red Mountain (3-3)
The Colts still hold out hope of grabbing one of the eight 6A playoff spots in their first season up from 5A. They are 13th in the rankings, but depending on shuffling above them and which teams the AIA committee selects for the Open Division championship, they could find themselves in the field.
Highland (4-3) at Higley (3-4)
The Hawks have lost three in a row yet still cling to the No. 7 seed in the current 6A playoff field. They can’t afford a loss to the Knights if they hope to make the final cut.
Sandra Day O’Connor (4-3) at Mountain Ridge (3-4)
The Eagles last made the postseason in 2015, but as things stand entering Week 8, they hold the final 6A playoff position. A win could solidify that hold; a loss to the Mountain Lions (20th in the rankings) could prove disastrous.
Shadow Ridge (5-2) at Valley Vista (2-5)
The Stallions, like Casteel, find themselves outside the 6A playoff field entering the final week, but a win plus some help could get them back in the postseason for the first time since 2013.
Sunnyslope (5-0) at Boulder Creek (6-1)
The Vikings enter the final week No. 6 in the Open Division rankings. A win over the Jaguars (No. 16 in the Open rankings, No. 5 in 6A) could clinch a spot in the Elite Eight, while a loss might knock them out of the conversation.
Notre Dame Prep (3-2) at Horizon (3-2)
These teams currently hold the final two spots in the 5A playoff field based on the conference rankings. The Saints return from COVID-19 quarantine in time for an East Region finale against the Huskies, who came out of quarantine themselves last week. Agua Fria, the first team out of the current field, is an interested party in the outcome.
