LAS VEGAS - Sure-to-be-Power-5 recruit Davion Gause has an interesting nickname he goes by at Chaminade-Madonna College Preparatory School.

In fact, people call him "Bullet" so often, you'd think it was his real name.

"I've had it since I was 5 years old," Gause said. "It's because I used to play defense and would hit hard."

Well, these days, Gause stars on the other side of the ball for the Lions as a sophomore - at running back.

And as multi-faceted the Lions are, they always have this workhorse to rely on - like Friday when he rushed for 194 yards on 33 carries in the Florida state champions' 35-24 victory over Highland (Ariz.) in a GEICO State Champions Bowl Series game at Bishop Gorman High School.

Gause didn't have a rushing touchdown, but his 25-yard scoring catch from Cedrick Bailey with 22 seconds remaining in the first half was the key moment that triggered the Lions' turnaround.

"He is a powerhouse," Chaminade-Madonna football coach Dameon Jones said.

Gause, a 5-foot-11, 210-pounder, had 21 touches - 20 carries and the pass reception - in the first half alone, and didn't seem to break a sweat.

"Man, my running backs coach works me so hard in practice, I am used to it," Gause said. "I will go six quarters and overtime if I have to."

Jones returns most of his offensive playmakers next season, and likes moving them around - especially under center in the "Wildcat" formation.

Six different players took snaps out of the backfield Friday night. It worked - the Chaminade-Madonna gained 462 yards.

"I am looking forward to (calling players in the future)," Jones said. "I plan to add some more pieces to it."
