Dwight Phillips upsets Chris Nelson in the 100 meters: Georgia high school track and field state championships video, photos, results

South Forsyth's Nelson was the heavy favorite in the 7A final, but Pebblebrook's Phillips prevails by two-hundredths of a second.

Chris Nelson entered Saturday's Class 7A state championship final in the 100 meters as the fastest high school athlete in Georgia, but the day belonged to Dwight Phillips at McEachern High School.

Pebblebrook sophomore Phillips edged out South Forsyth junior Nelson by the thinnest of margins, running the 100 meters in 10.43 seconds, beating his PR by one-hundredth of a second and Nelson by two-hundredths of a second.

Nelson redeemed himself by blazing to victory in the 200 meters, running a 21.36 to beat out McEachern's Joshua Knox and become a two-time state champion in the event.

Nelson also finished second in the long jump Thursday behind Cherokee's Ryane Martin Jr.

Lowndes' Kaniya Johnson left no doubt in the 7A girls 100-meter championship, running the fastest time in Georgia this year at 11.26. Tamiia Fuller (Peachtree Ridge) finished second at 11.44.

That pair also ran 1-2 in the 200 meters, with Johnson's 23.20 beating Fuller's 23.67.
