Hiram pulls a big upset over Calhoun; Valdosta knocks off Lowndes; Read our recaps of 15 key games

Week 8 in Georgia featured a lot of the state's top teams on bye, but still managed to produce some big-time games.

North Cobb tangled with Walton in a huge Region 5-AAAAAAA matchup and came away victorious. Hiram pulled a massive upset over Calhoun, who had just pulled off its own upset of Cartersville one week prior. Valdosta also earned a big victory Friday night by defeating cross-town rival Lowndes. Check out how the night went across the state of Georgia.

North Cobb 33, Walton 6: Looking to win back-to-back games for the first time this season, North Cobb traveled to Walton and made a statement, defeating the Raiders on its home field 33-6. The Warriors led 19-0 at halftime and didn’t allow a high-powered Raider offense to score until late in the fourth quarter. Backup QB Nick Grimstead tossed three touchdown passes in the win and rushed for another to open Region 5-AAAAAAA play with a win.

Hiram 44, Calhoun 34: One week removed from a massive upset victory against Cartersville, Calhoun found itself on the wrong end of an upset Friday night. This week, it was Hiram doing the upsetting after they knocked off Calhoun 44-34. It marks their first victory over the Yellow Jackets in program history. Hiram secured the victory with two touchdown runs in the fourth quarter, one each from Kaden Hamilton and Jemarion Whatley.

Kennesaw Mountain 49, Osborne 0: Looking to remain unbeaten on the season, Kennesaw Mountain has no trouble getting past Osborne Friday night. The Mustangs grabbed an early lead and never looked back en route to a dominant 49-0 win to open Region 5-AAAAAAA play. The Mustangs will tangle with Walton next week.

Valdosta 13, Lowndes 6: In one of the oldest rivalries in the state of Georgia, it was Valdosta who bested cross-town rival Lowndes 13-6 Friday night to improve to A fast start gave the road Wildcats a 13-3 advantage heading into the second quarter. From that point on, the only other points scored in the game was a field goal from Lowndes in what was a defensive battle that went in favor of the Wildcats. The win snaps a 5-game losing streak in the series.

Carrollton 38, East Coweta 28: The Trojans overcame an early 7-3 deficit and went on to build a three-touchdown lead before eventually holding on to beat East Coweta 38-28. The win keeps Carrollton’s undefeated season alive at 7-0. Freshman quarterback Julian Lewis finished his night 22 of 32 passing for 215 yards and two touchdowns. East Coweta finished with more than 400 yards of offense but turned the ball over three times in the loss.

Marietta 14, Hillgrove 10: Marietta trailed Hillgrove 10-7 at halftime, but scored early in the second half and held on down the stretch for a hard-earned 14-10 victory Friday night. The game ended in the closing seconds when Joseph Moseley intercepted Hillgrove with 44 seconds remaining.

Lambert 40, Forsyth Central 14: Lambert’s historic season continued Friday night with a dominant 40-14 win against Forsyth Central. With the win, the Longhorns improve to 6-0 on the season. Cameron Bland scored two rushing touchdowns in the first quarter and the Longhorns never looked back. They held a 27-7 lead at halftime and tacked on 13 more points in the second half to leave with a victory.

Monroe Area 41, Hebron Christian 7: The Lions’ undefeated season came to a close Friday night after losing at home to Monroe Area. The Purple Hurricanes capitalized off several Lion mistakes in the first half and led 21-7 at the half. Monroe Area pitched a shutout in the second half and used a dominant ground game to cruise past the Lions en route to a 34-point victory. Both Monroe Area and Hebron have a 1-1 record in Region 8-AAA play.

Denmark 21, West Forsyth 10: The Danes earned a hard-fought 21-10 victory against West Forsyth Friday night thanks to a spark from quarterback Jacob Nelson, who returned for the first time since Week 1 after sustaining an injury. Trailing 3-0 in the third quarter, Nelson entered the game for the first time and promptly led the Danes on back-to-back touchdown drives. Leading 14-10, running back Amon Williams put the game on ice with a touchdown run in the closing seconds.

McEachern 10, Harrison 7: McEachern trailed Harrison 7-0 at halftime, but scored 10 points in the second half to come away victorious. Trailing 7-3 entering the fourth quarter, Jayveon Campbell scored a 2-yard touchdown in the closing minutes to put McEachern in the lead for good.

Westlake 27, Pebblebrook 11: The Lions earned its fourth win in a row after taking care of business against Pebblebrook Frida night. Westlake led Pebblebrook 20-3 at the half thanks to a pair of touchdown runs.

Blessed Trinity 34, Pope 6: The Titans got back to their winning ways Friday night with a well-earned 34-6 victory over Pope. The Titans scored three touchdowns in the first quarter. All 34 points were scored in the first half.

Rome 52, Sequoyah 0: Rome made quick work of Sequoyah Friday night, shutting them out 52-0. The Wolves built a 31-0 lead by halftime on touchdowns through the air and on the ground. Jaedon Harmon scored three touchdowns on the ground for the Wolves.

North Forsyth 21, Lanier 7: Looking to remain unbeaten in Region 8-AAAAAA play, North Forsyth did just that with a 21-7 win at home against Lanier. The win improves the Raiders to 3-0 in region play. The Raiders led just 13-7 in the third quarter, but a 3-yard rushing touchdown from Colin Miller put the game out of reach in the fourth quarter.

Roswell 58, Lassiter 0: The Hornets scored early and often en route to a dominant 58-0 win over Lassiter Friday night. Roswell quarterback KJ Smith tossed three touchdown passes in the victory. Nykahi Davenport scored three rushing touchdowns in the victory and caught one of Smith’s three touchdown passes to finish his night with four scores.
