Week 11 Georgia football roundup

Week 11 saw several teams in the state clinch region championships with just one week left in the regular season.

Buford, Colquitt County, Grayson, North Cobb and Carrollton all clinched region championships out of Class AAAAAAA, leaving just three 7A regions to decide on a region champion in the final week of the season. Langston Hughes, Gainesville, Jefferson and Stephens County also managed to clinch region titles, as well as several others. Check out how Week 11 played out below.

Brookwood 41, Parkview 33: The Battle of Five Forks didn’t disappoint Friday night. In the end, it was Brookwood who prevailed, 41-33, to clinch the No. 2 seed out of Region 4-AAAAAAA and send rival Parkview into the No. 4 seed with one week remaining. A win for the Panthers would have clinched the No. 2 seed for them, as well as set up a region championship showdown next week against Grayson. Alabama commit Dylan Lonergan passed for 161 yards and three touchdowns. Parkview quarterback Colin Houck went for 302 yards and Khyair Spain rushed for 168 yards and three touchdowns in the losing effort.

Buford 56, Mountain View 7: On a night where Buford only needed six plays out of Alabama running back commit Justice Haynes, the nationally-ranked Wolves steamrolled the Mountain View Bears 56-7 Friday night. The Wolves scored touchdowns on their first seven drives of the night. Despite just six touches, Haynes rushed for 161 yards and two touchdowns while also reeling in a 47-yard reception. Quarterback Dylan Wittke tossed two touchdowns in the win and rushed for another. K.J. Bolden and Devin Williams caught the two scores while Jaylen Neal returned a blocked field goal attempt 80 yards for a score. The Wolves clinched the Region 8-AAAAAAA championship with the win.

Mill Creek 45, Dacula 0: For the second consecutive week, Mill Creek pitched a shutout after rolling past rival Dacula 45-0 Friday night. The Hawks led 35-0 at the half and senior quarterback Hayden Clark turned in a big night, tossing four touchdown passes, all in the first half. Alabama commit Caleb Downs scored twice on the night, one rushing and one receiving. Brendan Jenkins also caught two touchdown passes on the night. The Hawks clinched the No. 2 seed out of Region 8-AAAAAAA and will host a playoff game in the first round.

Langston Hughes 68, South Paulding 14: Langston Hughes’ undefeated season continued Friday night with a 68-14 blowout of South Paulding. Running back Jakail Middlebrooks scored four touchdowns on the night on runs of 52, 15, 6 and 3, respectively. Air Noland was responsible for five touchdowns, four passing and one rushing. AJ Barns caught two of the touchdowns from Noland while Jovanni McGee and DJ Willoughby hauled in the other two. With the win, Hughes clinched the Region 5-AAAAAA championship.

Grayson 41, Archer 0: With a 41-0 shoutout of Archer and a Parkview loss, the Grayson Rams clinched the Region 4-AAAAAAA championship Friday night. Rival Archer was no match for the Rams, who jumped out to a 27-0 halftime lead and never looked back. Running Back Joe Taylor scored a pair of touchdowns in the win and Dylan Elder scored another. Quarterback Jeff Sims threw for a touchdown and rushed for one as well. The Rams have out-scored region opponents 157-27 so far this season.

North Cobb 47, Cherokee 17: The Warriors ran their winning streak to five in a row Friday night after racing past Cherokee 47-17 and clinched the Region 5-AAAAAAA championship in the process. Their 47 points are the most they have scored in a game this season. Quarterback Nick Grimstead tossed a pair of touchdown passes in the win while running backs Ben Hall and David Mbadinga both scored two touchdowns on the ground.

Carrollton 52, Campbell 7: The Trojans completed a perfect 10-0 regular season Friday night after easily defeating Campbell 52-7. Quarterback Julian Lewis tossed four touchdown passes in the win, including a pair to Caleb Odom. Bryce Hicks and Jamua Evans each scored a rushing touchdown in the win. The Trojans are off next week and will now have two weeks to gear up for their first-round playoff game.

Norcross 50, Peachtree Ridge 13: Flying under the radar all season, Norcross won its seventh straight game Friday night after dismantling Peachtree Ridge on the road 50-13. The victory sets up a showdown with North Gwinnett next Friday night for the Region 7-AAAAAAA championship. Quarterback AJ Watkins threw five touchdown passes in the victory, including two to UGA tight end commit Lawson Luckie. The Blue Devils are averaging more than 40 points per game this season, one of the highest clips in 7A.

Lambert 31, South Forsyth 13: The Longhorns continue to impress this season and won again Friday night, this time defeating South Forsyth 31-13 to improve to 9-0 on the season. Quarterback James Tyre was responsible for three of their touchdowns, two rushing, and one passing. The win sets up a matchup with Milton next Friday for the Region 6-AAAAAAA championship.

Milton 21, Denmark 14: It wasn’t easy, but Milton was able to survive with a 21-14 win at Denmark Friday night. Milton will now face off against Lambert next Friday with the winner claiming the Region 6-AAAAAAA championship. Milton quarterback Luke Nickel tossed three touchdown passes in the victory, two to Marc Essley and one to Debron Gatling. The Eagles led 21-7 at the half and held on in the second half to win by a touchdown.

North Gwinnett 45, Discovery 8: The Bulldogs scored a touchdown on their opening possession and went on to roll past Discovery 45-8 Friday night. The win sets up a showdown at Norcross next Friday night to determine the Region 7-AAAAAAA champion. Four different Bulldogs scored rushing touchdowns in the first half alone. Quarterback Ryan Hall also tossed two touchdown passes in the win.

Newton 24, South Gwinnett 14: Behind a big offensive night from sophomore running back Zion Johnson, the Rams got past South Gwinnett 24-14 to keep their postseason hopes alive. Johnson rushed for a career-high 313 yards and scored twice. Justin Benton was responsible for the final score, a short rushing touchdown. A win next week for the Rams at home against Archer will clinch the No. 3 seed out of Region 4-AAAAAAA.

Gainesville 34, North Forsyth 21: The Red Elephants needed a second-half comeback to claim their first region championship since 2013. Gainesville trailed North Forsyth 21-7 in the third quarter but finished the game on a 27-0 run to win the game by 13 points. Darius Cannon was instrumental in the win after hauling in a 69-yard touchdown and returning a kickoff 99 yards for a touchdown. The win gives the Red Elephants the Region 8-AAAAAA championship and improves them to a perfect 9-0 on the season.

Jefferson 49, Heritage-Conyers 6: The Dragons clinched their third region championship in four years with a dominant 49-6 road victory at Heritage Friday night. Running back Sammy Brown was responsible for three touchdowns, two rushing and one receiving. Shonez Porter also scored a pair of rushing touchdowns for the Dragons. The win improves the Dragons to 7-2 on the season and gives them the Region 8-AAAAA championship in their first year playing in Class 5A.

Stephens County 28, Oconee County 27: Thanks to a 28-27 comeback win over Oconee County and a Hebron Christian loss, Stephens County clinched the Regoin 8-AAA championship, their first since 2007. The Indians trailed 20-14 at the half, but scored a late touchdown to prevail by one point.
