3 Georgia high school football players killed in car crash early Sunday morning
A single vehicle crash in northwest Georgia killed four people, including three Chattooga High School football players, early Sunday morning.
WXIA in Atlanta reported the driver and two passengers were pronounced dead on the scene after their car reportedly ran off the road, struck a driveway and flipped.
Two others were taken to a hospital, where one died and the other remains in critical condition.
Georgia State Patrol is actively investigating the crash, which occurred on Highway 114 just after midnight on Sunday, and has not released names of those involved.
The school released photos on social media grieving three football players.
"Heartbroken is the only word that comes to mind as we have lost 3 of our own," a statement on the Chattooga football team's Facebook page said.
The Chattooga Fellowship of Christian Athletes is hosting a prayer gathering Monday evening on the school's field and counselors will be made available at the school Tuesday morning to offer students support, the school said.
"Please be in prayer for the families of all that have been affected by this terrible tragedy," Chattooga Schools Superintendent Jared Hosmer said in a statement to media. "If any of our school community needs help during this trying time, please reach out to any school employee.”
Chattooga, which is in Summerville, Georgia, is 2-8 on the season, 1-5 in A Division I Region 7 play. It beat Coosa 33-12 on Friday to snap a five-game losing streak.
