SBLive Power 25 national girls basketball rankings: St. John Vianney (New Jersey) moves up to No. 2

Sierra Canyon (California) is still unbeaten and remains atop the SBLive Power 25 national high school girls basketball rankings. But there are several teams nipping at their heels.

St. John Vianney (New Jersey) is 30-0 after blowing out Our Lady of Mercy Academy in their playoff opener. The Lancers will face a test in their next game against Red Bank Catholic in the state semifinals.

SBLIVE POWER 25 NATIONAL GIRLS BASKETBALL RANKINGS

Feb. 27, 2023

1. Sierra Canyon (Chatsworth, California) (30-0 – 1st)

Finally CIFSS Open Division champions after an impressive 70-57 victory over Etiwanda. Still has business to take care of in state playoffs, but Trailblazers are a few games away from history.

2. St. John Vianney (Holmdel, New Jersey) (30-0 – 3rd)

After blowing out Our Lady of Mercy Academy in playoff opener, Lancers take on Red Bank Catholic in state semifinals - a team that hung with Lancers in mid-February (58-52 SJV win).

3. Montverde Academy (Montverde, Florida) (24-1 – 4th)

All but guaranteed the Eagles will defend their Geico national championship title in a month. In the meantime, they sit, wait, work out - and hope they can idly move up.

4. Long Island Lutheran (Brookville, New York) (17-2 – 5th)

Scored 198 points in the span of 24 hours in wins over Grand Street Campus and St. Joseph-by-the-Sea. Federation Tournament final four in a few weeks.

5. Sidwell Friends (Washington, D.C.) (26-3 – 2nd)

Well, after last week's loss to Georgetown Visitation prep - the Quakers' national championship reign is all but over. They remain in top five, however, which is where they will likely finish.

6. La Jolla Country Day (La Jolla, California) (27-3 – 7th)

Undefeated (10-0) since loss to The Webb School in late January - with wins over Conway (AR), Etiwanda, and Mission Hills (twice). Just won back-to-bak CIFSDS Open Division titles

7. Incarnate Word Academy (Bel-Nor, Missouri) (26-0 – 6th)

Had just one game last week, and is was fairly competitive - a 53-43 win over Burroughs. Winning streak is now up to 94 games, longest in country. Last team this close to 100 was Mount Notre Dame (ended at 98 in 2022).

8. Georgetown Visitation Prep (Washington, D.C.) (22-5 – Bubble)

Been a zig-zagging affair for the Cubs, who started out at No. 9, drooped to the "bubble" - and now shoot back up to highest ranking of season after victory over Sidwell Friends.

9. The Webb School (Bellbuckle, Tennessee) (30-4 – 8th)

Flattened Fayette Academy by 60 points in the quarterfinals as the Feet embark on another state championship. They face King's Academy next in postseason run.

10. Lone Peak (Highland, Utah) (20-3 – 9th)

Most likely two wins away from another state championship. On Tuesday, Lone Peak takes on Westlake, the only Utah team to play them down to single-digits this season.

11. Archbishop Mitty (San Jose, California) (26-2 – 10th)

While accustomed to rarely being tested in Central Coast Section - this is a new level. Cruised past rival Pinewood 74-51, for its seventh CIFCCS Open Division title in eight years.

12. Morris Catholic (Denville, New Jersey) (23-3 – 12th)

Nothing like having an easy time in the state quarterfinals, which the Crusaders did against Wardlaw-Hartridge (89-16). Semifinal game with Lodi Immaculate delayed by impending snowstorm.

13. Etiwanda (Rancho Cucamonga, California) (29-3 – 13th)

Came up short of back-to-back CIFSS Open Division titles, but did prove it can hang with Sierra Canyon. Could get another shot at the Trailblazers if it can first avenge earlier loss to La Jolla Country Day in regional semifinals,

14. Duncanville (Duncanville, Texas) (26-4 – 14th)

Still parked after forfeit to Skyline a couple of weeks ago as coaching staff was suspended for violation of previous sanctions. Are Pantherettes still top 10 team? Certainly in the conversation.

15. Hoover (Hoover, Alabama) (32-1 – 15th)

Stifled one of the best offenses in the state yet again in a 48-35 playoff win over Bob Jones. Buccaneers now face Prattville (20-2) in the 7A state semifinals.

16. Sacred Heart (Louisville, Kentucky) (29-3 – 16th)

Dominated its district tournament as Valkyries crushed Highlands Latin and Atherton by a combined score of 144-19. ZaKiyah Johnson scored 36 points in combined 37 minutes.

17. Centennial (Las Vegas, Nevada) (24-1 – 17th)

Dominant run to its eight consecutive state championship in win over Coronado (59-20). Longtime coach Karen Weitz tied state record with her 14th state girls championship overall.

18. Edmond North (Edmond, Oklahoma) (24-0 – 18th)

Been a record-breaking season for the Lady Huskies - and for senior Laci Steele. She set program's all-time scoring mark in regional final win over Mustang - and is closing in on 2,000 points 

19. Hazel Green (Hazel Green, Alabama) (34-1 – 19th)

While the Trojans last couple wins haven't been as lopsided as they're accustomed to, they're back in the AHSAA 6A semifinals. Beat Clay-Chalkville (55-45) to reach this juncture.

20. Paul VI (Haddonfield, New Jersey) (20-2 – 20th)

If Eagles handle Camden Catholic, they will get the rematch they've been waiting for - against No. 2 St. John-Vianney for the state title. A year ago, Paul VI fell 69-50.

21. Putnam City West (Oklahoma City, Oklahoma) (21-3 – 21st)

After winning a regional championship with a 56-40 win over Norman North, the Patriots look to win an area championship against Edmond Memorial.

22. Mater Dei (Santa Ana, California) (28-3 – 22nd)

It's time for a rematch with Sage Hill, which pushed the Monarchs in non-league play in January despite missing a key player. The winner heads to state quarterfinals against No. 1 Sierra Canyon.

23. Clovis West (Fresno, CA) (30-1 – 23rd)

Make it 11 consecutive Central Section Division 1 championships for the Golden Eagles, who could plausibly make a huge leap in the top-25 rankings with Archbishop Mitty coming up.

24. Mason (Mason, OH) (25-1 – 25th)

Coming out of Region 4, team has to beat other top two teams, Princeton and likely Lakota East, before reaching the state semifinals. Rematch with Lakota East could be tasty - that is Comets' only loss this winter.

25. South Shore (Brooklyn, NY – 20-5 Bubble)

Currently on an 11-game winning streak, Vikings are latest to leave the "bubble" and crack the top 25. The key win during that stretch was late-January triumph over Paul VI, which is now No. 20.
