Two defending state champions went at it, and only one survived - Rigby
RIGBY, Idaho - If the Rigby Trojans proved anything Friday night - they are still the team to beat in southeast Idaho.
The reigning Class 5A champions posted a 28-0 victory over Skyline, the defending 4A champion.
It was Rigby's sixth consecutive victory over the Grizzlies, dating back to the 2017 season.
After blocking a field goal on Skyline's opening series, the Trojans broke a scoreless tie midway through the second quarter on Luke Flowers' 6-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Brady Packer.
Right before halftime, Rigby pushed it to a 14-0 lead on Sam Gamino's 1-yard touchdown up the middle.
After that, the defense held it down - which was impressive considering just a week ago, the Grizzlies put up points in bunches in a 46-7 victory over cross-town rival Idaho Falls.
Rigby closed the half by forcing a turnover at the goal-line.
Entering the field like conquering heroes before the game, with planes flying overhead streaming their school colors and the game ball hand delivered by a skydiver who parachuted onto the field, Rigby exuded confidence - even if it took a while to get untracked.
