Here are the candidates for SBLive's Illinois High School Athlete of the Week for Oct. 17-22 as nominated by fans, readers and SBLive’s staff.

Dominik Ball, Palatine football

Ball ran for 168 yards on just 13 carries and had touchdown runs of 44 and 56 yards in Palatine’s 30-7 victory against Hoffman Estates. 

Robert Battle, East St. Louis football

The junior quarterback was impressive on Friday completing 14 of 22 passes for 201 yards and three touchdowns in a 40-10 win against De Smet.

Lily Brecknock, Fenwick girls tennis

A sophomore, Brecknock won the Illinois Class 1A singles tennis championship and led Fenwick to the team title. Brecknock became the first player in school history to win an individual title and the team tennis championship was also the first in school history. 

Antonio Brown, Jacobs football

The senior running back had a big game on Friday with 16 carries for 222 yards and three touchdowns. He helped lead Jacobs to a 37-7 victory to earn a share of the Fox Valley Conference championship.

Sam Deligio, Huntley football

Deligio had a strong performance this week as he rushed 16 times for 204 yards and two late touchdowns to help Huntley beat Crystal Lake South 27-19.

Denzell Gibson, IC Catholic Prep football

Gibson carried the IC offense on Friday as he put up over 200 all purpose yards and three total touchdowns in their 25-14 win over conference rival, St. Francis.

H.J. Grigsby, Joliet Catholic football

Grigsby, a junior running back, had touchdown runs of 21, 44, and 56 yards in the Hilltoppers 56-20 win against Montini to improve their record to 7-2.

Mitchell Hughes, Grayslake North football

Hughes, a sophomore defensive back, intercepted two passes to lead an impressive defensive effort in a 31-13 win over conference opponent, Wauconda. The victory sealed a share of the Northern Lake County Conference title.

Tyler Jansey, Batavia football

Jansey, a standout senior and Wisconsin Badger commit, rushed 21 times for 234 yards, including a 93-yard touchdown run that started the scoring off for Batavia.

Sophia Kim, Hinsdale Central girls tennis

Kim, a senior, took third place in the Illinois Class 2A singles tennis tournament to lead Hinsdale Central to the Class 2A team championship, the school's 12th title in 17 years. 

Chris Lofgren, Marist football

Lofgren rushed for nearly 100 yards and three touchdowns in the second half of his team's 34-16 win against Brother Rice.

Logan Malachuk, Nazareth Academy football

The sophomore quarterback completed 16 of 24 passes for 189 yards and three touchdowns to help the Roadrunners beat Benet Academy 37-7. 

Matt Projansky, Stevenson football

The senior quarterback completed 18 passes out of 24 attempts for 281 yards and three touchdowns en route to a 43-8 league victory against Libertyville.

Gage Range, Yorkville football

Range, a junior defensive back, came up big for the Yorkville defense with three second-half interceptions to help propel the Foxes to a 17-0 win over Oswego.

Mac Resetich, Hall football

Resetich put in an impressive effort in Hall’s victory against Bureau Valley. He rushed 15 times for 272 yards and four touchdowns and added a 74-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. During the contest, he eclipsed 2,000 rushing yards on the season.

Colt Michael, O’Fallon football

Michael was a threat through the air and on the ground for the Panthers. He threw for 223 yards and three touchdowns and added a rushing score to help O’Fallon to a 49-20 victory over Cahokia.

Payton Solomon, Lemont football

Solomon completed 10 of 14 first half passes for 169 yards and three scores while helping Lemont to a 49-6 victory over Thornton Fractional South. 

Rachel Soukup, Prairie Ridge girls cross country

A senior, Soukup won the Class 2A cross country regional at Belvidere with a personal-best time of 17:05.84. 

Zane Timon, Mascoutah football

Timon threw for 151 yards and three touchdowns in Mascoutah’s 50-23 win against Carbondale. He also added a successful 2-point conversion pass and 58 yards on the ground. 

Tyler Vasey, Prairie Ridge football

Vasey put up big numbers in Prairie Ridge’s 56-49 victory over Crystal Lake Central. He rushed for 389 yards and four touchdowns on 32 carries and he threw a touchdown pass to secure the Wolves victory.

Matt Vezza, York football

Vezza completed 27 out of 38 passes for 286 yards and three scores to help York secure a West Suburban-Silver Conference title and the schools first 9-0 season in their history.

Sarah Wang, Stevenson girls tennis

Wang, a junior, won her second straight Illinois Class 2A singles tennis championship and helped Stevenson finish third in the team standings. 

Jesse Watson, East St. Louis football

Watson, a junior wide receiver for the Flyers, caught four passes for 89 yards and three touchdowns to help East St. Louis improve to 7-2 after a 40-10 win over De Smet.


Congratulations to Prospect football's Brad Vierneisel, who was voted the SBLive's Illinois High School Athlete of the Week for Oct. 10-15. Vierneisel received more than 60 percent of the votes.

The Knights’ senior quarterback only played one half but completed 13 of 14 passes for 165 yards and three touchdowns as Prospect rolled to a 44-12 win at Wheeling.
