Here are the candidates for SBLive’s Iowa High School Team of the Week for Sept. 19-25 as nominated by coaches, fans and readers.
Voting will conclude Sunday at 11:59 p.m.
Cedar Rapids Xavier football
The Saints rewarded Coach Duane Schulte with his 200th career win, moving to 5-0 with a 38-0 shutout of Cedar Rapids Washington.
Davenport West football
The Falcons beat Dubuque Hempstead 14-7 to improve to 5-0 after winning just five of their previous 34 games dating back to 2018.
Des Moines North football
With a 36-17 win over Des Moines Lincoln, the Polar Bears moved to 4-1 on the season after going 4-76 in their previous 80 games dating back to 2012.
Nolan DeLong increased his season rushing totals to 1,429 yards and 17 touchdowns in just five games as Durant remained unbeaten.
Pleasant Valley football
The Spartans rolled to a 49-12 victory over Davenport North, keeping a firm grasp on the No. 1 spot in the Class 5A rankings.
Des Moines Christian volleyball
The Class 3A top-ranked Lions finished 6-0 at the Nevada tournament, running their winning streak to 15 straight games.
Hull Western Christian volleyball
The Wolfpack, ranked second in Class 2A, defeated four South Dakota schools in the Sanford Pentagon Classic in Sioux Falls.
Iowa City Liberty volleyball
The Lightning, ranked No. 2 in Class 5A, scored impressive wins over Pleasant Valley (No. 1 in 5A) and Mount Vernon (No. 3 in 3A) at the Mount Vernon tournament.
Iowa’s top-ranked Class 1A team improved its record to 23-2 with four wins in the North Cedar Invitational.
North Scott volleyball
The Class 4A second-ranked Lancers went undefeated in the Dubuque Invitational at Hempstead, moving to 23-3 on the season with four victories.
Dubuque Wahlert girls cross country
Led by Julia Gehl’s winning time of 18:13, Class 4A top-ranked Wahlert had four runners in the top 5 and scored 22 points while winning the Dubuque Senior Invitational.
North Polk boys cross country
The Class 3A second-ranked North Polk boys posted victories at the Newton and Roland-Story meets, with Zach Sporaa winning individual titles in both meets.
Mount Vernon-Lisbon boys cross country
Grady Olberding’s individual victory enabled Class 3A No. 9 Mount Vernon-Lisbon to edge Class 2A top-ranked Tipton at the Solon Invitational.
Dallas Sauser set a new state record with 590 passing yards and six touchdowns in a 57-28 win over Sioux City North. The previous state mark was 583 by Porter Hummel of West Sioux in 2014.
Lewis Central football
The defending Class 4A state champions moved to 5-0 by zipping to a 42-0 halftime lead en route to a 63-0 win over Council Bluffs Thomas Jefferson.
