Here are the candidates for SBLive’s Iowa high school athlete of the week for May 22-28. Read through the nominees and cast your vote. Voting will conclude Sunday at 11:59 p.m. If you would like to make a nomination in a future week, email nate@scorebooklive.com

Jack Tierney, Iowa City Regina baseball 

The senior pitched a five-inning no-hitter, striking out 10. Regina blanked Tipton, 10-0.

Kaden Tyler, Mason City baseball

Tyler went 2-for-3 with a home run and four RBIs in a 9-5 comeback victory over Hampton-Dumont-CAL. The victory gave coach Troy Rood his 500th career win, and he is just the fourth Class 4A coach to win 500 games with just one program.

Eli Menke, Lake Mills baseball 

The junior struck out 20 batters in a complete-game two-hitter against West Hancock. Menke needed 105 pitches in the 2-0 shutout.

Andrew Theiss, Clear Lake baseball 

Theiss struck out 10 in four innings, combining with Hudson Carney to fan 16 West Fork batters in an 8-0 victory. Theiss allowed one hit, while Carney did not give up a hit and struck out six in three innings of relief.

Bo Harrington, Nashua-Plainfield baseball

Harrington struck out 13 in five innings as the Huskies rolled to a 14-0 win over Rockford. Harrington also tripled and drove in three runs.

Logan Wagemester, Cedar Rapids Prairie baseball

The junior righthander pitched a no-hitter against Cedar Rapids Jefferson in an 11-0 victory. Wagemester threw 70 pitches in six innings, striking out four and walking two.

Camden Davis, Hudson baseball

Davis doubled, homered and drove in four runs in a 14-7 triumph over AGWSR. Davis also scored three times.

Tucker Ladeburg, Wapsie Valley baseball

Ladeburg allowed just four hits and struck out 10 in a complete-game 6-1 win over Dike-New Hartford. He also homered, doubled and drove in three runs.

Will Nuss, Johnston baseball

The sophomore third baseman went 4-for-4 with a double, triple, two home runs and six RBIs in a 14-7 win over West Des Moines Valley. Nuss was 3-for-3 with another home run in a 10-0 victory for the defending Class 4A state champions in the second game of the doubleheader.

George Nahas, W.D.M. Dowling baseball

The Maroons’ senior had two hits, including a triple, and drove in two runs as Dowling salvaged a doubleheader split with Ankeny, 6-3. He had a double and drove in a run in a 3-2 win over Webster City and two hits and two runs scored in an 8-7 win over Dowling, improving Dowling’s record to 6-1.

Joey Okie, Ankeny Centennial baseball

The junior and University of Iowa commit struck out 16 and allowed just one hit in six innings of relief in a 9-0 win over Waukee.

Maddux Frese, Cedar Rapids Prairie baseball

The senior struck out 14 and gave up only one hit for the unbeaten Hawks in a 7-0 victory over Dubuque Wahlert.

Cal Parr, Pleasant Valley baseball

The senior catcher hit two home runs and drove in five runs in an 8-7 win over defending Class 3A state champion Western Dubuque in the first game of a doubleheader. Parr had a grand slam in the second game, also won by Pleasant Valley, 8-7.

Carter Van Horn, Waukee Northwest baseball

The senior first baseman was 2-for-3 with three RBIs and stole two bases in a 10-0 win over Des Moines Lincoln. Van Horn had another hit and scored twice in a 7-6 win over Norwalk.

Bennett Brueck, Indianola baseball

The senior second baseman collected two doubles and a single, driving in five runs in a 16-1 rout of Creston.

Sam Harris, Urbandale baseball

The senior outfielder and Duke commit was 3-for-4 with a homer, three runs scored and three RBIs in a wild 18-10 win over Ames in the second game of a doubleheader. Harris also homered and knocked in a pair in an 8-2 win in the opener.

Jackson Mishler, Linn-Mar baseball

The junior collected four hits and drove in six runs, helping the Lions to a 7-1 and 10-4 sweep of Iowa City West. Mishler also made a few impressive plays at shortstop.

Rowan Donels, Cedar Rapids Kennedy baseball

The senior was 5-for-9 with three RBIs and four runs scored as Kennedy split a doubleheader with Dubuque Hempstead. Kennedy is off to an 8-2 start.

Ben Gilliland, Van Meter baseball

The senior catcher for the five-time defending 2A state champions had three hits and drove in a pair in a 10-0 win over Roland-Story.

Korver Hupke, Independence baseball

The senior first baseman socked a grand slam home run as the Mustangs downed Charles City, 7-1. Hupke added a triple and knocked in two more runs the next night in a 15-0 victory over North Fayette Valley.

Carson Medina, Southeast Polk baseball

The senior struck out 10 in six innings of relief as the Rams blanked Indianola, 4-0, in the first game of a doubleheader. Southeast Polk won the nightcap, 3-2, improving to 8-2 on the season.

Collin Homan, Remsen St. Mary’s baseball

Last year’s 1A state runners-up posted shutouts of Webster City (11-0) and Algona Garrigan (17-0) at Garrigan. Sophomore Collin Homan combined for three doubles, a home run and five RBIs in the two wins.

Connor Sitzmann, Sioux City Bishop Heelan baseball

The junior allowed two hits and struck out nine in six innings as the Crusaders completed a sweep of Sioux City West with a 10-0 win.

Gus Varney, Dike-New Hartford baseball

The senior pitched a five-inning shutout and helped his own cause with two hits, including a double, and an RBI in a 12-2 victory over Denver.

Reid Johnson, Ankeny baseball

The senior outfielder was 3-for-4 with a double and RBI as the Hawks beat West Des Moines Dowling, 9-2, in the first game of a doubleheader.

Landon Stolte, Lisbon baseball

In his first two games of the season, the senior is a combined 6-of-8 at the plate with three doubles and seven RBIs. Lisbon swept Prince of Peace in its season debut.

J.D. Schneider, Spirit Lake baseball

The sophomore smashed three home runs and knocked in eight as the Indians rolled past Forest City, 21-6, in their home opener.

Macy Kellar, Mason City Newman softball

The senior pitched a no-hitter as the Knights beat Top of Iowa Conference rival Osage, 1-0. Kellar struck out 12 and walked one while throwing 88 pitches. Kellar fanned 12 in her second start, a 5-2 win over Algona.

Ellie Flanagan, North Linn softball

The senior struck out 11 and allowed four hits as the Class 1A fifth-ranked Lynx beat Class 2A No. 9 Cascade, 6-2.

Kate Hejlik, Garner-Hayfield-Ventura softball

The sophomore went 3-for-5 with two doubles and a single, driving in a run and scoring five times. GHV set a school record with 31 runs, outscoring Forest City, 31-16.

Libby Trewin, West Fork softball

The sophomore threw a 12-strikeout no-hitter in a 12-0 win over Rockford. Trewin walked just two in the five-inning contest and also drove in a pair of runs.

Dottie Byars, Lake Mills softball

Byars struck out 14 and allowed just two hits in a 7-3 victory over Belmond-Klemme.

Kylie Dvorak, Riceville softball

Dvorak was 3-for-3 with a single and two doubles, scoring four runs and stealing two bases in a 13-4 win over North Fayette Valley.

Maddie Oetzmann, Waukee Northwest softball

The senior struck out 11 and allowed just three hits in a 10-0 shutout of Humboldt. She did not walk a batter in the six-inning effort.

Claire Long, West Des Moines Valley softball

The junior hit two home runs and drove in five runs as the Tigers opened the season with a 13-2 win over Cedar Rapids Jefferson. Long homered again the next night in a 4-1 victory over Winterset.

Aubrey Bacon, Southeast Polk softball

The junior was 2-for-2 with a double, homer and three RBIs in a 16-4 win over Ottumwa. Jesslyn Stairs and Ava Goldsberry also went deep for the Class 5A third-ranked Rams.

Emily Koranda, Linn-Mar softball

The sophomore struck out 13 and gave up just one hit in a 12-0 five-inning win over Waterloo West to complete a doubleheader sweep. Koranda was also 2-for-3 at the plate with a double and RBI.

Ellie Doster, Fort Dodge softball

The eighth-grader had a double and homer in three trips to the plate, helping the Class 4A second-ranked Dodgers to a 12-0 win over Waterloo East in the second game of a doubleheader. Fort Dodge won the first game, 19-1.

Maddy McDermott, North Scott softball

The senior helped her own cause, hitting a two-run homer in a 5-1 season-opening win over West Delaware. McDermott struck out 10 and allowed four hits in the pitching circle.

Delaini Thompson, Carlisle softball

The junior was 2-for-4 with a homer and two RBIs in a 6-1 victory over Winterset. Lauren McGriff also homered for the Wildcats.

Nyah Hulbert, Norwalk softball

The sophomore left fielder homered twice and doubled, driving in two runs for the Class 4A No. 4 Warriors in a 5-4 win over 5A No. 3 Southeast Polk.

Peyton Driscoll, Williamsburg softball

The senior struck out 16 batters in a 10-1 win over Vinton-Shellsburg, allowing six hits in the first game of a doubleheader. The Class 3A top-ranked Raiders won the nightcap, 15-2, as sophomore Taylor Pitlick had three hits and drove in three.

Leah Mauro, Davenport Assumption softball

The sophomore pitched a four-hit shutout, striking out 13 in a 4-0 win for the Class 3A No. 2 Knights over Class 2A No. 1 Iowa City Regina.

Dakota Lake, Saydel softball

The senior not only pitched a one-hit shutout, striking out 10, but hit two home runs and drove in three in a 10-0 victory over South Hamilton. Lake has 50 strikeouts and a 4-0 record to start the season.

Tierani Teslow, Dubuque Wahlert softball

The senior first baseman was 6-for-9 with two doubles and nine RBIs in the Knights’ doubleheader sweep of Cedar Rapids Kennedy.

Madeline Barker, Davis County softball

The senior had 15 strikeouts and allowed five hits in a 5-0 win over Knoxville. Barker is 3-0 with 35 strikeouts in her first three games of the season.

Ella Clark, Lisbon softball

The senior first baseman was a combined 4-for-6 with a double, homer and three RBIs for the Lions in wins over West Burlington and Louisa-Muscatine in the L&M tournament.

Cooper Klaahsen, Central Springs softball

The senior picked up her fifth pitching win of the season, blanking North Butler on two hits in a 7-0 win. Klaahsen has allowed four earned runs and struck out 39 in five games.

Finley Netten, Van Meter softball

The sophomore had a productive first week of the season for the Class 2A No. 4 Bulldogs. Netten was 15-for-25 (.697) with three doubles and 10 RBIs as Van Meter got off to a 7-2 start.

Jaycee Near, Southeast Warren softball

The sophomore catcher hit two home runs and drove in five runs as the Class 1A top-ranked Warhawks won three games in the Winterset tournament. The Warhawks beat ranked teams Van Meter, ADM and Interstate 35 in the tournament.

Marina Cronin, Remsen St. Mary’s softball

The junior struck out 11 and gave up two hits as the Hawks downed Hinton, 2-0. Cronin has 19 strikeouts in her first 10 innings of work this season.

Mia Walker, Newell-Fonda softball

The senior was 3-for-5 with a triple, RBI and two runs scored as the Mustangs won two games in the Kingsley-Pierson tournament. Walker was also the winning pitcher in one of those contests.
