Iowa high school boys basketball Top 25 rankings (1/15/2024)

A lot of high school basketball games were postponed due to the historic snowstorms last week. However, there was some movement in our rankings as some ranked teams lost. Who were they?

1. Cedar Rapids Kennedy (9-0)

The undefeated Cougars flexed their muscle in a 79-53 thrashing of Linn-Mar as three players scored in double figures – led by Xavier transfer Joe Bean’s 19-point, 11-rebound double-double.

2. Dubuque Senior (9-0)

The undefeated Rams, who move up two spots, are perhaps the biggest surprise in Class 4A. They are led by Jacob Williams, who averages 21 points and 9.1 rebounds per game.

3. North Scott (9-1)

Freshman Josiah Harrington hit for 19 points as the Lancers rolled to a 60-41 win over Davenport North in their only game last week.

4. Iowa City West (8-1)

Both of the Trojans’ scheduled games were postponed last week. Jack McCafferey leads the Trojans in scoring (16.8) and rebounding (7.7).

5. Ankeny Centennial (8-2)

The Jaguars’ games vs. Urbandale and Dowling were postponed. Luke Winkel is scoring 22.3 points and handing out 4.9 assists per game.

6. Waukee (9-3)

Mason Costello had 14 and Evan Jacobson had a double-double with 12 points and 12 boards in a 68-63 win over Ankeny to move up a spot.

7. West Des Moines Valley (7-3)

The Tigers fall from fourth after a 64-59 loss to unranked Waukee Northwest (6-6) despite getting 21 points from Zay Robinson and 20 from Trevin Jirak.

8. Ankeny (8-3)

The Hawks drop two spots despite Carson Johnson’s 24 points and four assists in a 68-63 loss to Waukee.

9. Cedar Falls (6-2)

The Tigers had three games postponed due to the snow storms. Anthony Galvin (14.7), William Gerdes (11.4) and Cade Courbat (11.4) each average double figures for the Tigers.

10. Norwalk (7-2)

The Warriors crack the Top 10 despite having their game against Oskaloosa postponed. Norwalk is led in scoring by Redek Born (17.9) and Aidan Harder (15.8).

11. Council Bluffs Abe Lincoln (7-2)

The Lynx games vs. Maryville (Mo.) and Sioux City West were postponed. Cole Arnold (21.1) Creighton Bracker (16.2) lead AL in scoring.

12. Linn-Mar (6-4)

The Lions dropped out of the top 10 after getting blown out 79-53 to top-ranked Kennedy. They have now lost three straight and four of five after starting out 5-0.

13. Clear Lake (9-0)

The Lions, who are the top 3A team in our all-class top 25, had home games vs. two quality opponents in Nevada (9-1) and Humboldt (7-2) snowed out. Thomas Meyer leads the team in scoring (13.0).

14. West Lyon (11-0)

The 2A Wildcats had their only game last week at Rock Valley postponed. Carson Hoogeveen (12.8) and Trevor Clesielski (10.1) lead a balanced attack.

15. Carroll Kuemper Catholic (10-1)

The 2A Knights had their Hawkeye 10 game at Glenwood postponed and longtime rival Bishop Heelan cancelled by the snowstorms last week. Michael Kasperbauer (13.9), Brock Badding (13.5) and Carson Kanne (11.8) pace the Knights.

16. Pleasant Valley (7-3)

The Spartans blew out winless Clinton 65-32 for their fifth straight victory behind David Gorsline’s 25 points on 11-of-15 shooting in their only scheduled game.

17. Dallas Center-Grimes (6-2)

The Mustangs had two trips to Pella to face Pella Christian and the Dutch snowed out. Jackson Green (16.0), Jonathan Howard (15.4) and Calix Cahill (14.8) lead the Mustangs.

18. Bishop Heelan (7-2)

The 3A Crusaders had tilts against ranked teams Abe Lincoln and rival Kuemper postponed by the winter storms. All-stater Matt Noll averages a double-double of 24.1 points and 10.9 rebounds per game.

19. Marquette Catholic (11-0)

Marquette has four players averaging double figures in scoring, led by Spencer Roeder’s 16.1 points and 8.7 rebounds per game.

Both of the Wolfpack’s games were postponed last week. Kaden Van Regenmorter pours in 21.1 points per game.

20. Hull Western Christian (9-1)

Both of the Wolfpack’s games were postponed last week. Kaden Van Regenmorter pours in 21.1 points per game.

21. Sioux City East (8-2)

The Black Raiders had a big matchup with rival Abe Lincoln and Sioux City North snowed out. Senior Fitzy Grant is the team’s leading scorer at 14.7 per game.

22. Waverly-Shell Rock (8-2)

The 3A Go-Hawks, riding an 8-game win streak, are led by the Frazells – Noah (17.2) and Luke (15.0), along with Benny Ramker (14.0). They had a big game against previously ranked Williamsburg cancelled.

23. MOC Floyd Valley (10-2)

Winners of four straight, the Dutchmen had a road game at Sheldon postponed. Jesse Van Kalsbeek is scoring at a 23.1 clip for MOC.

24. Davenport Assumption Catholic (7-3)

The Knights had their game at Davenport Central postponed. Navon Shabazz and Damyen Jackson combined for almost 32 points per game.

25. Des Moines Roosevelt (7-3)

The Rough Riders saw their four-game win streak end, falling 66-60 to defending 3A champion Bondurant-Farrar. They also had games against Waterloo East and Des Moines Lincoln postponed. They cling to the final spot in our rankings.
