Iowa high school girls basketball Top 25 rankings (2/5/2024)

West Des Moines Valley handed Cedar Rapids Prairie its second loss, North Polk toppled three-time defending Class 2A champion Dike-New Hartford, and Solon’s Kobi Lietz beat the buzzer and Mount Vernon to highlight last week’s action among the SBLive Top 25. 

1. Johnston (19-0) 

Iowa State recruit Aili Tanke had a game-high 23 points to go with 6 rebounds as the Dragons extended a two-point halftime lead after the break in a 72-59 win over Waukee. Johnston was ranked No. 20 in last week's SBLive National Power 25 high school girls basketball rankings. 

2. West Des Moines Dowling (15-4)

Creighton recruit Ava Zediker scored a game-high 24 points, including 10 of 12 from the free-throw line in a 51-45 win over Ankeny Centennial.

3. Davenport North (16-2)

With Iowa recruit Journey Houston sidelined to injury, the Wildcats won their two games last week by an average of 61 points.

4. Waukee (14-4)

Sophia Hope registered 21 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steals in a 73-36 win over Indianola.

5. Ankeny Centennial (10-8)

Mya Crawford led the way with 19 points in a 53-45 win over Ankeny on Friday.

6. Ankeny (10-8)

Hawks get another shot at No. 1 Johnston on Monday.

7. Clear Creek-Amana (18-0)

Clippers have wins over North Linn, Solon and Mount Vernon to their credit this season.

8. Waukee Northwest (9-9)

Wolves play at Dowling Tuesday and at Ankeny Centennial Friday as they gear toward the postseason.

9. Pleasant Valley (15-3)

Led by Jessie Clemons’ eight, Spartans had 29 steals in a 70-27 win over Muscatine.

10. North Linn (19-1)

There are no state-rated teams along with the Lynx in Region 1 of Class 1A.

11. Sioux City Heelan (17-1)

Northwest Missouri State recruit Brooklyn Stanley had 23 points, 8 assists and 4 steals in a 74-28 win over Sioux City West.

12. Cedar Falls (17-1)

Tigers should get a stern test on Thursday when they travel to Cedar Rapids Prairie.

13. West Des Moines Valley (11-8)

One of the top games last week was Valley’s 71-69 OT win over Cedar Rapids Prairie in which Elise Jaeger led the way with 17 points, 11 rebounds and 4 assists.

14. North Polk (17-2)

Trailing by 6 after three quarters, Comets took down three-time defending 2A state champ Dike-New Hartford on its home court, 51-48, as Abby Tuttle had 17 points and 4 steals.

15. Solon (17-3)

Junior Kobi Lietz provided the biggest shot of last week, a buzzer-beating 3-pointer to lift the Spartans past Mount Vernon 55-54 in a battle of 3A powers.

16. Dike-New Hartford (17-2)

Payton Petersen had 28 points, 11 rebounds and 5 steals in the 51-48 loss to North Polk.

17. Mount Vernon (17-3)

Chloe Meester’s jumper with 12 seconds left gave Mount Vernon a 54-52 lead over Solon, before Kobi Lietz sank her game-winning 3-pointer.

18. Sioux Central (18-1)

If the Rebels reach the Class 2A, Region 5 final, either Pocahontas Area or North Union could be waiting.

19. Estherville-Lincoln Central (17-2)

Midgets beat Spirit Lake (13-5) on Tuesday by 15 and Friday by 22 last week, and they could meet again in the 3A, Region 3 final.

20. Newell-Fonda (17-1)

Mustangs have been to state in 13 of the last 16 seasons, and won four Class 1A state championships in the last nine years.

21. Southeast Polk (9-9)

Rams close the regular season by facing Top 10 teams Ankeny Centennial, Johnston and Waukee.

22. Cedar Rapids Prairie (14-2)

In a two-point overtime loss to West Des Moines Valley, sophomore Emily Larsen had 24 points, hitting 5 of 7 3-pointers, along with 7 rebounds.

23. Sioux City East (15-4)

In a 75-48 win over Sergeant Bluff-Luton, Alexandra Flattery contributed 22 points, 9 rebounds and 7 steals.

24. Waverly-Shell Rock (20-0)

Go-Hawks go for an unbeaten regular season on Friday at home against Decorah (14-5), whom they beat 60-34 on Jan. 5.

25. Dallas Center-Grimes (16-3)

Freshman Tessa Jones came off the bench to hit 3 of 5 3-pointers and score 12 points as the Mustangs held off Pella, 54-50.
