Neves claimed Division I individual title by one stroke

By Buck Ringgold

Just a seventh-grader, Jade Neves competed against some of the best high school golfers in the state, and came away victorious.

Neves, playing for Sacred Heart-New Orleans, shot a two-round score of 152 and won the Division I girls individual golf championship by a stroke at the state tournament May 1-2 in Lafayette.

She shot a 75 in the opening round and then followed that up with a three-over-par 77. That included making three birdies, including one on the par-5 18th hole, which allowed her to claim the overall title.

For her efforts, Neves was voted the SBLive Louisiana Athlete of the Week covering May 1-7.
