BALTIMORE, MARYLAND – Archbishop Curley High School in Baltimore turned to one of their own on Wednesday when the school named Demonya Womack as its new head football coach. He replaces Brendon Ireton, who stepped down earlier this year to take the head coaching position at The Tatnall School in Delaware.

Womack is a 2011 graduate of Curley and played under Sean Murphy, who led the Friars for 21 years and is the school’s all-time winningest football coach. Womack, who served as a defensive assistant last year under Ireton, also is the Director of Admissions at Curley. However, he will transition from admissions to the athletic office and physical education department for the 2023-24 school year.

"I am very happy for Demonya," said Murphy who is now the athletic director and head football coach at John Paul II Catholic School in Greenville, North Carolina. "It's always special when one of your former players goes into coaching. It's even more special for me that he was named head football coach at Archbishop Curley. Demonya will do a great job at Curley. When he played for me, he was coachable, a leader who was team oriented with a great work ethic and had a high football IQ. These qualities will serve him well as a head coach."

Domonya Womack was a football star at Archbishop Curley prior to his graduation in 2011. After serving as a defensive assistant with the Friars last season, he has named the school's new head coach.

After graduating from Curley, Womack played football for four years at Albright College and was on the Lions’ Middle Atlantic Conference championship team in 2015 which made it to the NCAA national playoffs. Womack also completed an internship with a professional sports team, then worked in operations and as an athletic director for national youth nonprofit organizations before rejoining the Curley community.

“My passion resides in developing young people,” Womack said. “Helping to develop and prepare men to be positive and productive members in their communities and in life.”

Womack, who has a Master of Science degree in sports management from the United States Sports Academy, will begin his football responsibilities immediately.

“Curley has had a huge impact on my life, providing me a pathway to growth and success, and I’m excited for the opportunity to pay it forward to future generations of Curley men, added Womack.”

A graduate of Albright College, Demonya Womack will be transitioning from his role as Curley's Director of Admissions to the athletic office and physical education department as he assumes the duties of head football coach.

“Coach Womack stood out because of his vision and mission-first approach for the Curley football program," said Curley athletic director Justin Gordon. "Demonya practices the Franciscan values in his actions and his words. He is a proven mentor to so many Curley students through admissions and in the athletic arena. He has the knowledge of what it takes to be successful at Curley and in the MIAA, with big dreams for the football program. Simply put, he is the right coach for Curley.”

Curley has won five MIAA B Conference football championships, all under Murphy. Last season the Friars were 6-4 overall and 4-2 in the B Conference as they reach the league semifinals.
