Top games in week 2 of Michigan high school football

The leaves are changing colors and the air is getting brisk, which signifies that football is back in the state of Michigan. The pads are back on at all levels, and we are already through one week of action with high school football.

Friday nights in Michigan with everyone supporting their hometown school are some of the best moments of the year. Football is finally back, and here are 10 games to keep your eyes on this week in Michigan high school football:

#3 Belleville (1-0) @ Dearborn (1-0) (September 1st)

This will be a fun game to watch because of the talent on the Belleville squad, specifically QB Bryce Underwood, who is a top recruit in the 2025 class.

The Tigers rolled over Novi in their week 1 contest, cruising to a 41-10 victory. Dearborn also improved to 1-0 with a 28-6 victory over Salem. Obviously, it’s early, but a matchup between two undefeated teams with a top recruit in the game will always be fun to watch.

Utica (1-0) @ #6 Dakota (1-0) (September 1st)

Unfortunately there aren’t a lot of ranked vs. ranked matchups this week, but getting to see any of the ranked teams in the state is exciting, regardless of the matchup. That’s what we’ve got with this game featuring the No. 6 Dakota Cougars.

Utica eked out a close victory in their week 1 matchup, defeating Rochester 27-24. Dakota earned an impressive two-score win over Brother Rice in its first game, winning 21-7 on the road.

This one will be tough for Utica to pull off the upset, but without a loss yet, its going in with high confidence and this should make for an entertaining battle.

Walled Lake Northern (0-1) @ Walled Lake Western (1-0) (September 1st)

Who doesn’t love a good crosstown rivalry game? Neither of these teams are ranked, but a rivalry is a rivalry. The crowd will be big and both sides will be determined to beat the other. It doesn’t get better than that.

Walled Lake Northern suffered a tough loss in their first game of the year, losing 27-8 against South Lyon East. Walled Lake Western got their season started off strong with a 47-26 win against South Lyon.

Lakeview (1-0) @ #7 River Rouge (1-0) (September 1st)

We’ve got another matchup of 1-0 teams to round out the Thursday slate featuring the always talented River Rouge Panthers.

Neither of these defenses have allowed a point yet this season. Lakeview took down Warren Woods-Tower 35-0, and River Rouge took care of business 22-0 against Cedar Springs. Something has to give in this one.

#22 Saline (1-0) @ Ann Arbor Huron (1-0) (September 2nd)

Anyone from the Ann Arbor/Saline area knows that these two conference foes do not like each other.

Huron struggled mightily in past years, winning just zero games from 2015-2017, but they’ve put themselves back on the map in the last couple years.

Last year, Saline won two close matchups against the Rats, including a playoff game that ended Huron’s season. The Rats will certainly be out for revenge on Friday.

Huron didn’t look great in its first game as they fell 32-2 against Lapeer at the Big House in Ann Arbor. Saline took care of business against Hudsonville in its week 1 matchup, winning 24-15.

Muskegon (1-0) @ #1 De La Salle Collegiate (1-0) (September 2nd)

Take a look at the top team in the state with this matchup as Muskegon takes on top ranked De La Salle.

Both teams head into this game still undefeated after Muskegon won a close battle with East Kentwood 20-14, and De La Salle romped Renaissance by a score of 41-13.

Expect De La Salle to take care of business in this one, and it should do it in exciting fashion with its talented roster.

#4 Catholic Central (0-1) @ Loyola (0-1) (September 2nd)

This game will be an interesting one because we’ll get to see how No. 4 Catholic Central bounces back after its week 1 loss to Chippewa Valley, 20-16.

Catholic Central is always a very talented team that competes, and getting off to an 0-1 start is not what it had planned. I would be shocked if it becomes 0-2.

Loyola didn’t start its season off how it wanted to, either, as it fell to Detroit Country Day 29-14. Can it pull off the upset to get the season back on track?

Harper Woods (1-0) @ #5 West Bloomfield (1-0) (September 2nd)

Harper Woods is technically 1-0, but it 2-0 victory on the schedule against Chandler Park Academy was a forfeit, so Harper Woods has not played a game yet. I’m sure it would’ve liked to get some game action before taking on the 5th ranked West Bloomfield squad.

West Bloomfield did play week 1 and blew Sterling Heights Stevenson out of the water, 47-7. It can put up a lot of points and be a very fun team to watch, so keep an eye on this one.

Ann Arbor Skyline (0-1) @ Dexter (1-0) (September 2nd)

Both of these teams were pretty consistently bad in past years, but Dexter has improved recently while Skyline, well, hasn’t.

This one will be fun to watch because of Dexter’s Cole Cabana, four-star running back who is committed to play at the University of Michigan.

This game is a great chance for Dexter to get off to a 2-0 start. The Dreadnaughts took down Grosse Point South 41-21 in their first game. Skyline is looking to avoid yet another 0-2 start as they fell to Pinckney week 1, 28-13.

#9 Caledonia (1-0) @ North Farmington (0-1) (September 3rd)

Take some time out of your week 1 college football viewing to keep an eye on the 9th ranked Caledonia Scots as they take on North Farmington.

Caledonia looks to put together another complete performance like they did week one against Holt. The Scots won that one 35-0.

North Farmington is hoping to avoid an 0-2 start and pull off a big upset after dropping its first contest of the year against Groves, 34-19.
