Michigan’s top high school girls basketball players: Meet the state’s best guards (pt. 1)

Michigan’s top high school girls basketball players: Meet the state’s best guards (pt. 2)

Last week was another great week of high school hoops across the state of Michigan. We saw a lot of entertaining games and we avoided weather cancellations. Let’s hope for more of the same this week as we inch closer toward March.

Here are this week’s top games in both boys and girls basketball in the mitten state:

Boys basketball

Ann Arbor Skyline (8-5) vs. Ann Arbor Pioneer (6-9), 02/07

Skyline and Pioneer aren’t having as good of seasons as they have had in recent memory, but this rivalry still deserves to be noted. Whenever two Ann Arbor schools face off with each other, it’s bound to be a good game.

Skyline has had a little more success so far this season, but I expect that the home comfortability for Pioneer will give them an edge in this game. This one should be close throughout.

Baldwin (13-1) vs. Traverse City Christian (10-4), 02/07

Heading up north for our second game, which should be a thriller. Both of these teams have the firepower to make some noise come March, and this game will have a playoff feel to it.

Baldwin has made it this far with only the one blemish on its schedule, but Traverse City Christian possesses the talent necessary to hand them a second loss. It’ll take its A-game, will it be able to pull it off?

Corunna (12-2) vs. Goodrich (13-1), 02/07

These two teams have had very similar seasons so far and have been on a collision course for awhile now. The atmosphere for this game is going to be electric and it should be really good basketball.

Games like this are when we get to see who is made for March. When the lights are brightest, which team will show up and get it done?

Bedford (11-4) vs. Ann Arbor Huron (13-1), 02/08

We’ve got a great SEC clash in this one, folks. Two of the top teams in the conference going head to head down the stretch of the season is what it’s all about.

If Bedford wants to stay in the title race, its going to have to win this game, and it certainly won’t be easy. Huron has just one loss on the year and looks as dominant as ever. Going on the road and getting a win will be a tall task for the Kicking Mules.

Beaver Island (0-7) vs. Grand Marais Burt Township (0-4), 02/10

Our last matchup of the week on the boys side is our winless battle of the week. Beaver Island heads to Grand Marais Burt Township as both teams hope to pick up the first win of the season.

It’ll be great to see the hard work pay off for one of these teams. These student-athletes put a lot into the game, they all deserve to celebrate a victory.

Girls basketball

Escanaba (13-0) vs. Kingsford (8-7), 02/07

Escanaba has been a great story to follow as the season has gone on. Another week is gone, and it's still undefeated. The perfect record faces another sneaky opponent, however.

Kingsford is going to give Escanaba all it can handle, as does each team that wants to take down an undefeated beast. With the home crowd behind them, maybe Kingsford can be the team that gets it done.

Grand Rapids West Catholic (15-0) vs. Spring Lake (7-7), 02/07

Pretty much the same story here. Any team that is undefeated this late into the season is going to have all eyes on them, and that is again the case with Grand Rapids West Catholic. It’s been a special season so far.

Like Escanaba, Grand Rapids West Catholic faces a tricky test. Spring Lake isn’t the best team West Catholic will face, but sometimes those are the games that sneak up on even the best teams. Don’t be surprised if Spring Lake can pull off the upset.

Jackson Northwest (15-1) vs. Coldwater (15-1), 02/07

Tuesday really is a loaded day. This game features two of the best going at it. This game should be about as even as it gets and I expect it to come down to the wire.

This is the kind of game that can do a ton for whoever wins it. Every win in a big game builds confidence, and as the season gets closer to the playoffs, confidence can be the biggest thing. This is a huge game.

Flint Carman-Ainsworth (12-0) vs. Holt (14-2), 02/08

Out of all the undefeated teams, Flint Carman-Ainsworth probably has the toughest test of the week. Going on the road against Holt is not going to be easy at all. Holt is a battle tested team and has proved that they can compete with the best of them.

The home crowd for Holt is going to be riled up, and that’ll certainly play a factor as well. If Flint Carman-Ainsworth can survive this one, it can win any game. This will be a great game to watch.

Vicksburg (16-0) vs. Three Rivers (9-5), 02/10

The theme of the week on the girls side is certainly difficult road tests for the undefeated teams. That is again the case here as Vicksburg takes its perfect 16-0 record to Three Rivers.

This is not going to be easy for Vicksburg. When a team is undefeated, it feels like each game gets harder and harder as the season progresses. That will certainly be the case in this one. How many undefeated teams on the list will survive the week?
