Vote now: Who should be SBLive’s Michigan Athlete of the Week? (Feb. 20-26)

Last week we saw a lot of games become victims to the snow day. Numerous school districts closed across the state last week due to a winter storm, canceling many games.

Let’s hope that doesn’t happen this week because we finally have March basketball, and the postseason gets underway in girls hoops.

Here are the top games in boys and girls high school basketball in Michigan this week.

Boys basketball

Cass City (17-2) vs. Kingston (16-4), 2/28

We’ve got a great treat on our hands for this one. Both of these teams have rattled off some impressive wins as the season has gone on, but they both have another chance at one here.

As we approach the postseason, it’s important to keep an eye on teams that are heating up, even if they haven’t been the best all year. Getting hot at the right time is all that matters, and whoever wins this game will certainly get some momentum heading into March.

Dearborn (15-6) vs. Brighton (17-4), 2/28

A lot of games this week will feel like a little sneak peak to the postseason, and that should certainly be the case with this one. Expect a lot of intensity on the floor when these two teams battle it out.

Brighton has been very tough to beat at home this season and that home-court should give them an advantage, but I expect Dearborn to be able to hang with them. This one should be fun.

Grand Rapids South Christian (18-3) vs. East Kentwood (16-5), 2/28

The close proximity of these two schools always contributes to the fun of the matchup. It’s even more fun when both of these teams are as talented as they are.

It’s taken great performances from the opposition to take down these two this year, and I’m sure both teams will play well enough to win. However, one team has to lose, and I expect this one to be decided late.

Brown City (19-1) vs. Peck (13-8), 3/2

Brown City has been as tough to take down as any this season. Does Peck have what it takes to pull off the upset at home on Thursday?

The recipe for upsets is there at this time of year. Some of the top teams are sometimes caught looking ahead to the postseason and get snuck up on. We’ll see if Brown City becomes a victim of the upset, or gets its 20th win of the season.

Bloomfield Hills Brother Rice (20-1) vs. Detroit Cass Tech (21-0), 3/4

It doesn’t get much better than this game right here. Two of the best teams in the state squaring off on a Saturday in March. We can only hope for a matchup like this in the postseason.

It’s extremely difficult to finish a season perfect, but Detroit Cass Tech has managed to make it this far. Can Bloomfield Hills Brother Rice end perfection, or will Cass Tech stay perfect?

Chelsea (21-1) vs. Canton Prep (14-6), 2/27

Chelsea has been nearly perfect this year with just the one blemish on its schedule, but another tough test awaits again Canton Prep. Hitting the road is never easy, but it’s even harder this time of year.

For Canton Prep, this is a great opportunity. This would be a win that could spark a great run to finish off the season. This is a huge game.

Cassopolis (16-6) vs. Bridgman (16-4), 2/27

Another great matchup to start the week pits Cassopolis against Bridgman. Both of these teams are capable of making some noise in the postseason, and it all starts now.

Expect this one to be very evenly matched. Both of these teams have had similar seasons, and this one should be pretty neck and neck. This will be a fun one to watch.

McBain (16-5) vs. Lake City (21-1), 3/1

Lake City has been nearly unstoppable this year, but now the games just mean more. With the season on the line, will it be able to stay hot?

McBain has been really good this year, too, but does it have what it takes to take down Lake City? This is certainly one of the more intriguing district battles of the week.

Warren Fitzgerald (20-0) vs. TBD, 3/1

We don’t know who Warren Fitzgerald will take on quite yet, but no matter who it plays, you’ll want to watch. Warren Fitzgerald finished the season undefeated and it’ll be fun to watch it in the postseason.

Will the magnitude of this game affect how Warren Fitzgerald plays? It’ll be interesting to see if its play matches what it was like during the regular season.
