SBLive's Michigan high school baseball Power 25: Orchard Lake St. Mary's stays on top as it gets closer to national record

Another week of baseball/softball is in the books and we are now almost through the first month of the season. These seasons fly by, and before we know it, it’ll be early June and districts will be underway. We still have a few more weeks before we get there, however, and here are this week’s top games in baseball and softball in Michigan:

Baseball

Carleton Airport (12-1) vs. Milan (8-3)

Two of the best in Division 2 will be going at it this week as Carleton Airport takes on Milan. Carleton Airport currently sits fourth in the D2 rankings while Milan sits at 11.

This is a great chance for Milan to get a highlight win and continue to climb up the rankings. If Carleton Airport gets this win and gets some losses from some teams above it, maybe we could end up seeing a new No. 1 in Division 2.

Dansville (5-4) vs. Vermontville Maple Valley (9-0)

The top team in the D3 rankings is Vermontville Maple Valley and it currently has a perfect record on the season. However, a perfect record always means that you’ll have a target on your back.

Dansville knows that it isn’t supposed to win this game and that it has nothing to lose. Sometimes that’s the perfect recipe for an upset. Can Vermontville Maple Valley stay perfect?

East Jordan (6-0) vs. Petoskey (6-3)

Another team on upset watch this week is East Jordan, the top ranked team in D4 and a team that is still riding a perfect record. Much like the previous game discussed, this is another recipe for an upset.

Petoskey is off to a good start this season and this is a game it has had circled. A win in this one would go a long way. Certainly an intriguing matchup.

Burton Bendle (0-8) vs. Genesee (0-3)

This week’s battle of the beatens features Burton Bendle and Genesee. Neither team has gotten off to a great start so far this year, but that big first win is coming for one of these squads.

You never know what kind of momentum even one win can spark.

Softball

Grosse Pointe North (2-0) vs. Macomb Dakota (4-0)

The No.4-ranked team in D1 is Macomb Dakota and it is hot to start the season, currently undefeated at 4-0. Grosse Pointe North is off to a great start as well, however, and the two will do battle this week.

Only one team will remain undefeated, and if Grosse Pointe North can pull off the upset, it should be ranked pretty soon.

Essexville Garber (10-1) vs. Trenton (5-0)

Two of the best teams in all of D2 go at it this week as Essexville Garber squares off with Trenton. This is going to be a game you’ll want to keep an eye on.

Essexville is currently 5th in the D2 rankings while Trenton is 14th. Whichever team comes out on top should see a nice reflection of that win in the rankings.

Beal City (6-4) vs. Evart (9-0)

Evart is ranked No. 1 in D4 at this point in the season and its play has certainly lived up to that ranking. Staying undefeated for almost a month is not an easy task, and it’s going to continue to get more challenging.

That next big challenge comes this week against Beal City. Beal City is a good team waiting for that big signature win. Here is its chance.

Mendon (5-1) vs. Bloomingdale (4-1)

Mendon is currently ranked No. 2 in D4 but that could change after a difficult test against Bloomingdale. Both teams are playing really well right now and this one could go either way.

Mendon could certainly fall with a loss, but with a win against another good team and some other pieces falling into place could propel it to the top spot in D4.

Alanson (0-4) vs. Wolverine (0-4)

Softball’s battle of the win less pits Alanson against Wolverine. The good news for both of these teams is that it’s still early. Both have only played four games and there is plenty of time to turn things around.

One team will get its first win and build some momentum, but even whoever starts 0-5 will have a lot of time to get things figured out.
