NEW BOSTON, Mich. — The Huron High School Chiefs (9-2) defeated the Milan Big Reds (10-4) 4-0 on Thursday at Huron High School.

Huron Pitcher Gavin Moczydlowsky completed the shutout with 14 strikeouts, only giving up two hits throughout tonight’s victory.

Here are three takeaways from the game

Pitching Mastery

This game became a pitching battle, as Huron’s Moczydlowsky battled tooth and nail against Milan pitcher Connor Dessellier. Neither defense allowed any offensive momentum throughout the first five innings.

For Huron, Moczydlowsky dominated. He delivered every pitch with ferocity, and his control held the Big Reds without a hit through three innings. However, his brightest moment came in the third inning with two Milan players on base following a pair of errors. With two outs remaining, he finished the inning with back-to-back strikeouts.

While defense contributed to his pitching success, Dessellier’s sheer power and physical stature were a sight to behold as he torched Huron batters. Dessellier finished with seven strikeouts.

Batters Found Their Groove Late

Dessellier controlled the tempo of the game. His command of the pitch left Huron batters either swinging at air or looking as the ball flew by. This lack of offensive production was the game until the sixth inning.

While Huron was able to get on base through a few walks, finishing with five as a team, and the Chiefs' best moment came during the top of the fifth inning as Moczydlowsky led their final offensive rally with a double.

Huron outfielder Ashton Warren followed with a single, driving in its first run. Bad news would continue for Milan, as Huron secured two walks and earned bases loaded. Huron catcher Connor Grant awarded his team with a single, driving in two runs.

Huron capped its offensive explosion with a bunt to earn the 4-0 lead and eventual victory.

Following their victory, Huron head coach Phil Yancey said his only message throughout the game was to remain consistent.

“It was time to start hitting,” Yancey said. “All year long, these guys don’t start hitting until the fourth or fifth inning. It takes seeing the pitcher two or three times before they find a hit. All year, that’s our story.”

Following tonight’s matchup, The Huron Chiefs (9-2) will play a home double header against The Edison Academy Pioneers (9-1) on Saturday, May 6th.

The Milan Big Reds (10-4) will return home to play against The Flat Rock Rams (9-6) on Monday May 8th.
