Here are the candidates for the Michigan High School Athlete of the Week for May 22-28 as nominated by coaches, fans and readers.

Read through the nominees and cast your vote. Voting will conclude Sunday at 11:59 p.m. and the winner will be announced Monday.

Jake Machiniak, Berrien Springs

Junior sprinter Jake Machiniak took first place in the 100m dash at the MHSAA Division 2 Finals with a time of 10.54, marking a personal record and the third fastest time in the state this year in that event. 

Machiniak also helped contribute to a first place finish in the 4x200 relay.

Braxton Brann, Ann Arbor Huron

Senior sprinter Braxton Brann finished first place in the 200m run at the MHSAA Division 1 Finals with a personal best time of 21.12, marking the second fastest time in the state this year in that event. Brann also took first place in the 110m hurdles with another personal best time of 13.77, marking the fastest time in the state this year in that event.

Shamar Heard, Clinton Township Chippewa Valley

Junior Shamar Heard participated in the 400m run at the MHSAA Division 1 Finals where he finished in first place with a personal best time of 47.78, marking the second fastest time in the state this year in that event. 

Heard also helped contribute to a first place finish in the 4x200 relay and a third place finish in the 4xx400 relay.

Trent McFarland, Utica High School

Senior Trent McFarland took first place in the 800m run at the MHSAA Division 1 Finals with a personal best time of 1:50.68, marking the second fastest time in the state this year in that event.

Kayenn Mabin, Kalamazoo Central High School

Senior Kayenn Mabin finished first place in the 300m hurdles at the MHSAA Division 1 Finals with a time of 38.31, marking the second fastest time this year in the state in that event, and second place in the 110m hurdles with a personal best time of 13.87, marking the second fastest time in the state this year in that event. 

Mabin also helped contribute to a second place finish in the 4x100 relay.

Keyanna O’Tey, Sturgis High School

Sophomore Keyanna O’Tey took a first place finish in the 100m dash at the MHSAA Division 2 Finals with a personal best time of 11.84, marking the fastest time this year in the state in that event among women’s, and another first place finish in the 200m run with a personal best time of 24.26, marking the sixth fastest time in the state this year in that event among women. 

O’Tey also helped contribute to a third place finish in the 4x100 relay and a fourth place finish in the 4x200 relay.

Elizabeth Anderson, New Boston Huron

Senior Elizabeth Anderson was first place in the 400m run at the MHSAA Division 2 Finals with a personal best time of 55.38, marking the fastest time in the state this year in that event among women. 

Anderson also took second place finishes in the 100m dash and the 200m run.

Rachel Forsyth, Ann Arbor Pioneer

Junior Rachel Forsyth continued her dominance on the track at the MHSAA Division 1 Finals. 

Forsyth took first place in the 1600m run with a personal best time of 4:44.22, marking the fastest time in the state this year in that event among women, and took first place in the 800m run with a time of 2:09.96. 

Forsyth also helped contribute to a first place finish in the 4x800 relay.

Nonah Waldron, Oak Park High School

Senior Nonah Waldron took a first place finish in the 300m hurdles at the MHSAA Division 1 Finals with a personal best time of 40.37, marking the fastest time this year in the state in that event among women, and first place in the 100m hurdles with a time of 13.56. Waldron also helped contribute to a second place finish in the 4x100 and 4x200 relays.

Emmry Ross, Onsted High School

Sophomore Emmry Ross participated in the 800m run at the MHSAA Division 3 Finals for a first place finish with a personal best time of 2:11.25, marking the second fastest time in the state this year in that event, and took first place in the 400m run with a time of 56.48.

Baseball

Ben Meyers, North Muskegon High School

North Muskegon’s Ben Meyers dominated on the diamond in their win against Montague, 17-5. Meyers finished the game 4-for-5 at bat as he notched two triples, one home run, three runs, and eight RBIs.

Parker Brzustewicz, Orchard Lake St. Mary’s

Senior Parker Brzustewicz had a good performance in a 12-0 win against Waterford Mott. Brzustewicz finished 3-for-3 at bat as he had two runs and one triple.

Noah Etnyre, Plymouth Christian Academy

Senior Noah Etnyre had good performances for Plymouth Christian Academy in two wins against Whitmore Lake and Lutheran. 

In an 8-0 win over Whitmore Lake, Etnyre finished with a .500 batting average as he notched one double, one run, and three RBIs. 

In a 9-2 win against Lutheran, he would go 1-for-3 at bat finishing with one run, one RBI, and one double.

Jake Leonard, Sterling Heights Stevenson

Sterling Heights Stevenson’s Jake Leonard showed out despite a loss to Brother Rice, 7-2. Leonard went 1-for-2 at bat as he finished with one run, one RBI and one home run.

Korbyn Russell, East Jordan High School

East Jordan’s Korbyn Russell threw a no-hitter for East Jordan on Saturday as they defeated Ellsworth, 5-0. Russell would pitch seven innings as he allowed no hits or runs and totaled 12 strikeouts on 20 at bats.

Emmett Bergmann, sophomore, Charlevoix

Bergmann plays varsity baseball and varsity golf. Last week, he tied his personal best of 79 strokes in golf to help his No.-4 ranked team to a regional championship during the same week his No.-9 ranked baseball team cinched the conference championship!

Softball

Delaney Monroe, Vicksburg High School

Delaney Monroe had good performances for Vicksburg in their wins against Paw Paw and Otsego. Against Paw Paw, Monroe finished with a .333 batting average as she notched one run, two RBIs, and one home run on just one hit. 

Against Otsego, she went 2-for-3 at bat notching two runs, two RBIs, and two home runs.

Reganne Bennett, Novi High School

Novi’s Reganne Bennett helped Novi to a 12-1 win over Walled Lake Central on Wednesday. Bennett finished with a .750 batting average as she notched three runs, one home run, and two RBIs.

Ally Coffey, Michigan Lutheran Seminary

Sophomore Ally Coffey showed out for Michigan Lutheran Seminary in their win against Breckenridge. Coffey pitched seven innings as she struck out 19 on 22 at bats, only allowing one walk.

Payton Manninen, Ishpeming High School

Junior Payton Manninen had some good performances last week for Ishpeming. In a 15-0 win over L’Anse, Manninen finished with a perfect 1.000 batting average as she notched one double, one home run, and three runs. 

Then in a 10-3 win over Baraga, she went 3-for-4 at bat finishing with one triple, one home run, two runs and three RBIs.
