Minnesota high school hockey top performers of the week (Feb. 6 - 12)

Each week, SBLive Minnesota power ranks the top 25 boys hockey teams regardless of classification. Here are the rankings for the week of Feb. 13

1. Warroad (24-0)

Last Week: 1

The Warriors are running away with the top spot, and they have won all 24 of their contests on the season, many by considerable margins. They can score, they can defend, and most importantly, they can win with the best of them.

2. Minnetonka (21-2)

Last Week: 3

Joining Warroad up at the top is Minnetonka, who have strung together a nice 12 game winning streak as the season winds down. With plenty of high quality wins and only a pair of losses, this team is set to make a splash in the postseason.

3. Chanhassen (20-3)

Last Week: 2

After suffering an uncharacteristic loss to Gentry, the Lightning showed that they are in fact beatable, although it’s important to note that this loss is sandwiched between two nine goal victories. Chanhassen will be fine, and look to return to form in their final two games of the regular season.

4. Edina (16-5-1)

Last Week: 5

The Hornets have lost twice since November, and both defeats were at the hands of second ranked Minnetonka. It’s safe to say Edina has found its groove after some early season miscues and will go into the playoffs as one of the top teams in the state.

5. Maple Grove (17-5-1)

Last Week: 6

Returning to the top five are the Crimson, who recovered nicely from their Rogers rivalry defeat to beat a very good Andover team 3-2. They will have a pair of tough matchups to end out their year, then will go into sections with what will likely end in an inevitable date with their rival with a trip to state on the line.

6. Rogers (15-5-3)

Last Week: 4

A one win, two loss week will dip the Royals down a few spots, but this team is still up there with the best prep programs statewide. However, late season losses to both Moorhead and Duluth East are slightly concerning, especially considering its last two games are against two high powered opponents in Stillwater and Wayzata.

7. Andover (17-6-1)

Last Week: 7

After what was arguably the most dominant stretch of the season for any team, the Huskies finally came down to earth after a 3-2 loss to No. 5 Maple Grove. They have one more game on the road against Centennial, and hope to finish the season with another showcase.

8. White Bear Lake (16-5)

Last Week: 8

The Bears took care of business last week, netting two wins against conference opponents and all but clinched the top spot in the Suburban East. They will end their season on a three game road stint, then look forward to the playoffs.

9. Hermantown (21-2-1)

Last Week: 12

As the season has progressed, this team has only continued to show why it belongs in the same conversation as its rival Warroad. The Hawks thrashed a highly-ranked Benilde-St. Margaret's team by five goals, further proving their legitimacy as they tear through opponents on their way to playoff hockey.

10. St. Thomas Academy (17-6)

Last Week: 10

The Cadets split their games from last week, losing 4-1 to Stillwater and squeaking out a 1-0 win against Hill-Murray. They will round out their season with a tough final battle at home against Maple Grove.

11. Wayzata (16-5-2)

Last Week: 9

The Trojans won both of their games this last week with relative ease, but they still face a tainted record from their unprecedented four game losing streak late in the season. They face a challenging final two games against Rogers and Edina, but this could also be an opportunity for them to sharpen up before playoffs.

12. Lakeville South (16-5-1)

Last Week: 15

The Panthers defeated both Eagan and Farmington with ease, but those two teams also have a combined record of 11-35. Lakeville South will wrap up its year with an easier load than many others on this list.

13. Benilde-St. Margaret's (16-7)

Last Week: 11

The Red Knights fell to Hermantown, but this team has a dangerous offense and hopes to pile on the points in their last two road games of the year, with one of them being against No. 3 Chanhassen.

14. Cretin-Derham Hall (15-8-1)

Last Week: 13

The Raiders lost their lone game of the week, a 6-2 defeat at the hands of conference rival Stillwater. They have lost four of their last six games, but they have a chance to end the season strong at home against White Bear Lake on Tuesday.

15. Champlin Park (15-8)

Last Week: 16

The Rebels extended their losing streak to three games after a loss to Duluth East, but they rallied nicely to shut out Anoka 6-0 and get back on track. They face a Gentry team with a similar record on Thursday, then wrap up their season against Mounds View at home.

16. Gentry Academy (15-8)

Last Week: 25

At long last, Gentry Academy went out and soundly defeated one of the best teams in the state, Chanhassen. With its woes against ranked opponents gone, this team may be a problem for opponents in the playoffs.

17. Orono (18-5)

Last Week: 14

Unfortunately, Orono came out of its gauntlet with multiple losses. The Spartans were throttled by both Benilde-St. Margaret's and Chanhassen, begging the question whether its impressive record tells the full story about this team.

18. Holy Family (18-5)

Last Week: N/A

Holy Family has had a quiet, albeit very successful season. They have defeated ranked teams like Edina and Park of Cottage Grove, and have already clinched their conference. Despite their smaller school status, this team is flat out good.

19. Park of Cottage Grove (16-8)

Last Week: 17

Park went out and got eight goals scored on them by Holy Family this last week, a game that hurts both its momentum and performance on this list. Fortunately for them, it has a nice tune up game against Forest Lake before sections.

20. Stillwater (13-7-3)

Last Week: 24

The Ponies endured a three-game gauntlet against ranked teams and came out with two wins, quelling some concerns of them being able to finish games. They will have another opportunity against Rogers on Tuesday to show they belong in the postseason conversation.

21. Shakopee (14-8)

Last Week: 19

The Sabers dropped two of their games last week against unranked teams, a major red flag this far into the season. Going into the final stretch before playoffs, they have lost three of their last four, and will need to turn their luck around if they want to make a postseason impact.

22. Buffalo (13-9-1)

Last Week: 20

Simply put, this team is far too interesting to keep off this list. While the Bison have been lackluster as of late, their schedule is still one that warrants a few losses, and they continue to win the games they need to. Mix in a few upsets into this equation, and it equals a ranked team that potentially could upset anyone on this list.

23. Centennial (13-9-1)

Last Week: 18

The Cougars did not do themselves any favors going into the rankings this week. Like Shakopee, they dropped two straight winnable games to Elk River/Zimmerman and Rosemount, and have a season finale matchup against Andover looming ahead of them.

24. New Ulm (20-3-1)

Last Week: 21

Unfortunately for New Ulm, smaller schools have a very short leash when their opponents are all unranked. The Eagles dropped a game against Litchfield/Dassel-Cokato this last Tuesday, and as a result, will also drop on this list.

25. Roseville (14-9-1)

Last Week: 23

Rounding out this list is Roseville, who has had a very up and down year. While the Silver Foxes have cooled down significantly since their six win, two loss start to the season, this team still has potential. They’ve netted a few ranked wins, will end the year in the positive record wise and have proven they can skate with anyone put in front of them.
