NORTH MANKATO, Minn. — The No. 1-seed Mankato East Cougars defeated the No. 3-seed Chisago Lakes 11-0 in the Class 3A title game on Friday at Caswell Park.

The Cougars jumped to a 1-0 lead after the first inning, and while they scored 11 runs in the game, one was all they needed after sophomore pitcher Kylinn Stangl threw a complete game shutout.

"She’s such a workhorse," head coach Joe Madson said. "She’s just tenacious. She doesn’t get tons of strikeouts, the ball just moves. She throws hard. Kids just don’t get to square it up very much."

Stangl threw 160 pitches in an extra-innings win over Cretin-Derham Hall in the semifinals, a victory that helped the Cougars earn this title, the first in school history since 1991.

"You know you’re going to have to win ugly, probably, in a game when you’re going to make a state championship run like that," Madson said. "Kylinn just kept us through it, continuing to pitch really well."

The Cougars, who watched their crosstown rival Mankato West win the championship last year, are happy to take the trophy across city lines.

"It feels great because we never really got over that hump, but this year we did," Stangl said. "I’m so proud of my team for sticking it out."
