NORTH MANKATO, Minn. — The No. 5-seed Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton Rebels defeated the No. 2-seed St. Charles Fighting Saints 3-1 in the Class 2A state title game on Friday at Caswell Park.
"I have no words," Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton's Alexis Froemke said. "Our team stuck together. We did it together."
Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton loaded the bases with its first three batters of the game. The Rebels got their first run on a passed ball. Danielle Boy singled through the left side of the infield to drive in the second run of the inning for the Rebels.
Boy was then caught stealing second, but the attempt allowed Makayla Wint to score from third base, and the Rebels finished the first inning with the three runs they earned all game.
And St. Charles scored its only run in the first inning as well. The Fighting Saints reached first base with a single from Grace Buring. Makadyn Gust singled to advance Buring, who then reached third base on a passed ball.
Mya Omdahl hit a line drive to left field, and it was deep enough for Buring to tag from third base.
St. Charles left two runners on base in the third inning, and their best opportunity to score came on the final play of the game.
The Rebels had two outs in the bottom of the seventh when Emma Chuchna singled on a ball that went past Froemke at third base. Buring hit a single between the second baseman and first baseman, and Chuchna rounded second base to push for third base. The Rebels' right fielder threw to Froemke, but the throw was in the dirt, and it passed Froemke.
Chuchna got up from third and went for home while Froemke ran to the passed ball.
"I need to do this; I need a straight shot right at Skylar’s head," Froemke said.
Fromke grabbed it, turned and threw out Chuchna at the plate for the final out of the state championship game.
"I hustled my butt off to go get it, and I threw it right to home," she said.
It's the first state title in Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton history.
"The goal was to stay together and follow the seniors, and we did that," Froemke said.
St. Charles pitcher Brenna Koeppel finished with three strikeouts, three walks, seven hits and three earned runs.
Autumn Leach and Natalee Linman split time on the mound for the Rebels. Leach finished with three innings pitched, five hits, one strikeout and one earned run. Linmen finished with four innings pitched, two hits, four strikeouts and one walk.
